Could you be more specific. Fishing conditions, type of fish, or whatever.

Store in a cool, dark area. Supposedly the biggest factor to mono break-down is light.

Sorry for not being more specific  I was talking about buying mono line in bulk. Cool and dark seems to be the popular opinion.

Thanx

Keep it dry and out of the sun. If its on your reel the dry part can be a challenge but if you are just storing extra spools it shouldn't be a problem. Excess heat can be a problem but UV and water will break the line down. Mono is way cheaper than braided lines so I usually put fresh line on fairly often depending on usage.

Have a friend that keeps his line in the fridge, and have heard of people keeping line in the frezzer. I think a cool dark place should suffice.

I wrap mine in tin foil and keep it in an old tackle box that is kept just for line. Sun light is a big problem for mono. Another major problem is ultra violet lighting in stores. The longer the line sits on the shelf the weeker it will get. This is another reason I like braided line. And don`t leave your rod and real hang in a gun rack in the truck where sun light can get to it. I keep my reals covered even in the garage.

Aside from keeping it away from sunlight, how old is too old? I recently inherited the remains of a bulk spool of Maxima--normally a good thing, but it's so old the label still says "Made in West Germany" (if I remember right, the Berlin Wall came down in '89). Any use left?

Don't know what exact line life is, but if nothing else, you have a long-term supply of weight leaders and/or bottom fishing leader, knot, knot, knot-knot!

Siwash,
I wouldnt use that as an indicator. I had some one shot spools from only a few years ago that said 'Made In West Germany'.......they probably used up whatever they had left before making new ones.
