Default Absurd spin (concious or not) in Oregonian

No, dam causes Salmon traffic jam, not vise versa...............

Efforts to bolster the salmon population appear to be working (at least this year), and thus a new "problem" emerged...over crowding in the ladder system. But only 25 fish died...so its not really a problem. I guess I dont see an "absurd spin" here at all. Just an interesting article discussing the record runs and irony that is at play. If these record runs continue over the next few years, then the dams apparently are not as much of an issue as they used to be. Who knows. Only time will tell.

If a boulder falls on the freeway reducing it from 5 to 1 lane and the traffic builds up at rush hour, would you expect a headline to read "Increased rush hour traffic causes traffic jam" or would you expect to read "Boulder on Freeway causes traffic jam"? Thus your absurd spin, again, concious or not.....

The primary cause of the increased runs is ocean conditions and the fact that 50% of them are of hatchery origin. Without dams, the river produced these numbers without hatchery supplementation.

I don't understand how a person can lament the misuse of tax dollars yet applaud the increase of fish runs based on very expensive tax payer supported fish hatcheries that would not be needed if the dams were not part of the picture.

Apparently the dam's ladders are capable of handling even more fish in a day as noted by this paragraph of the article:

"Burley and several other biologists said they were uncertain whether crowding was the cause. No dead chinook showed up on the dam's alternate fish ladder, on the Oregon side, which remained uncrowded, drawing a tenth to a quarter of the daily run."

Hmmm, 75-90% using 50% of the available space. They must have spent too much of their ocean time off California

Either that or the fish are afraid of the taxes on this side of the river!!

I am sure some will blame ODOT....... inadequate signage in the river to direct the Salmon to the proper lanes.

No argument there Thumperie.
So what?
The fact remains that without the hatcheries there would be far fewer fish. Yes, as long as the fish killing dams are in place, "yay hatcheries!"

And without politicians there would be far fewer taxes.
