Default Motor Sizing

I have a 12' 7" hull is what the title says. I looked on the plate in the boat and it says it will take up to a 25hp motor. So my question is will a 18hp or 15hp evinrude be ok? I like the idea of more motor but i want the boat to be safe as well. Also will the weight of the motor take away my total cargo weight allowed? Thx.

A 15 horse on an aluminum boat of that size will scoot pretty good, and probably still plane with a couple 200lb on people in it.

The weight difference between a 2 stroke 15 and 25 horse is minimal. The gear/people on the boat will have a much larger impact.

So the 18hp I just bought will work just fine? I went with a bigger motor because I like to go fast. I can't stand riding in a boat thats plowing water and barely moving. The most people that will ever be in it is me and my wife plus 6 crab rings and baits.

I would go 25 go for what its rated for. I have heard others on here and other places say you never hear somebody say they wish they got the smaller motor. A 25hp motor pushes my 15 foot boat but I could and do want to put on the 45hp. Again I wish I got the 45hp

Another thing to think about is the weight of the moter. The Four stroke moter are much heavyer that the two stroke moters. Many of the older small boats were built and designed for the lighter weight 2 stroke moters. The other day I was walking the dock at Bandon, there was a small 12' boat with a 15hp it's bow was pointed up a the sky. Under power it probably get up on plane. But trolling in a light chop the bow would probably hop around. In a small boat the balance is something to concider the floatation in the back of some small boats is not enough to suport the weight of the heavyer 4 stokes of the same hp.
