Default To spey or not to spey

I have a chance to buy a 14' 9-11 wt Spey rod never used for about $75 and I am moving back to Oregon but this time to Medford and I guess the question is would I find use for it in that area also what is the difference between a spey line and a standard line as I can buy standard line quite reasonably priced thru a contact here in Europe

Thats a big stick nowadays with all the new types of spey lines coming out. But 75.00 is a great price also. If it was me i'd pass on it and purchase a 7/8 wt 12'-13' rod. It will be lighter and a better fight with the fish.

the lines i use on my 2 handed outfit are all shooting heads around 25'-27' in lenght. I guess you could line a 2 hander with a single hand line just step up the wt of the line a bit.

good luck,

cb

$75 for the rod:

$200 for a reel

$80-90 for a Delta Line.

I love the long rods. Nothing like blasting out 80' of line with bushes and trees at your back.

In the end it's another tool.

Spey is the way to go for Steelhead. I was finally converted two years ago when I was outcast by a fishing buddy who was using a Spey and I was using my single hand rod. He was reaching water I couldn't reach because there was no backcast room for my single hander (brush and a high bank).

Spey lines are different then single hand lines. The AFTMA standard for a single hand eight weight line is 210 grains; an eight weight spey line will have a 550 gr. head. Quite a difference!

Likewise, a single hand five weight is 140 gr. and a Spey line can be 350 to 400 gr.

Most Spey rods use a recommended weight head in addition to a line weight.
