River City Fly Shop Experience
Went in there today for the first time to see a man about a reel. Met Don and he showed me his wears- he has a very large inventory of merchandise at his location. I had a very good shopping experience in there as Don was not only negotiable on prices but he was also more than willing to throw in accessory items. Basically, Don was wheeling and dealing and I felt like I came away with a good deal with merchandise on which my money was well spent. The prices in the shop were the best I had seen and I am mostly an internet shopper these days. I left the store a happy customer because of Don's willingness to 'make a deal'. I will certainly be shopping at the River City Fly Shop for my future needs.

Re: River City Fly Shop Experience
I totally agree. I signed up for a casting lesson there about a year ago. I walked in on the day the lesson was scheduled and turned out the instructor forget to tell the shop he wasn't going to make it. To make up for my lost time, without asking, they gave me a nice waterproof leather baseball hat as a consolation. They didn't have to, but very nice of them. I enjoy going there, but have to admit, I'm a bit intimidated as a novice when I go in.

I totally agree. Very helpful and ready to spend time with you. Wonderful fly shop. I especially like it when I see a few older gentleman sitting at the fly tying table with a cup of coffee sharing stories. AWESOME!!!

Re: River City Fly Shop Experience
Couldn't agree more guys. Don is one of the best shop owners in the northwest and I've toured most of them. I like to spread my dollar around to the local shops as I believe in local patronage, but I do have to say that the bulk ends up Don's way. He's knowledgeable, helpful, WELL stocked and always willing to make a deal.
If you really want a treat, look in to his Alaska trips. You get Don for a week!

Re: River City Fly Shop Experience
I would like to emphasize that he treats the occasional customer extremely well. I do not get out much between work and family (I know my priorities are all screwed up ). However, when I do have the need to pick something up I feel like I am treated like I shop there every day. He is generous in pricing and with information. I feel like this is the fly shop equivalent of the old time hardware store. Plenty of merchandise, information and advice. This is a place to linger - do not cheat yourself by rushing in and out.

Re: River City Fly Shop Experience
I, like the rest of you, have had nothing but great experiences shopping in there. Bought my Thomas and Thomas Horizon II 8 weight from Don, knocked off a few bucks and threw in some extra goods. I have probably been in there a hundred times and never left with anything less than a giant grin and a handful of flies. River City rules!

Re: River City Fly Shop Experience
It's always the same scenerio. I tell my wife, "I'll be right back, I need to pick someting up from the fly shop". And after a couple hours of talking to Don or Tim I finally get home. Don is a solid guy, with a great shop.

Re: River City Fly Shop Experience
River City is a great shop. I've had some good experiences there with casting lessons and the gear is always priced very reasonably. I do think Kaufman's has more spey stuff however...

Re: River City Fly Shop Experience
One day I was in and in need of a replacement rod. He handed me a nice rod and told me try it out and buy if I liked it. I went on my trip came back and saw that Don was at a fishing show so I stopped and handed him the money for the rod. He said, "what is this for?" I told him about our arrangement and he had forgotten all about it. I then worried he also gave me too low a price, so I set out at the show to determine the correct price for the rod. Sure enough he quoted me way too low. So I came back and tried to offer him some more money. Nothin' doing, just come buy and buy some more stuff. Never buy anywhere else ever!

That is great. I am hoping we all can keep them going in this economy. It is people like this who need to last beyond the box stores for all our good. Thank you.

Re: River City Fly Shop Experience
Have to chime in on this one as well. I love these guys. I admit that I am sometimes challenged becuase my Brand preferences and shop preferences don't always work out (ie I am pretty loyal to Simms waders). That said this is the one place I have been able to send my wife or others to grab a gift card for me that they did not feel unwelcome or out of place. If if you are like me and they don't have certain items, still go grab whatever you can and make sure they stay around.

Re: River City Fly Shop Experience
Haven't been doing much fly fishing lately, but River City is a great place to spend some money. They have THE best fly tying selection around. Don has got me to buy a couple things in there when I was on the fence about what I wanted, and it's always worked out. Pretty laid back staff also.

Re: River City Fly Shop Experience
I was in there last week. I bought a reel from Don four or five years ago at the sportsman’s show. Last summer I broke it. Don doesn't carry that brand anymore but he still took care of it.
Great selection. Great service. Great business ethic.
