Default eagle cap wilderness

I am heading up to eagle cap wilderness on saturday and will be hitting a few of the lakes around there until tuesday. I am going up the e fork of the lostine and will do some fishing at mirror and moccosin the first day. I am not so sure about which lakes I will hit on the other two days. I was thinking horseshoe one day and some of the lakes below glacier pass like frazier, prospect, or glacier. I haven't been to any of these lakes besides mirror so any advise on these lakes would help.
thanks

If you get to Horseshoe you could try crescent which is close by. It has been a bunch of years since I was there but the only lake I had much luck at. Years ago we got them to hit lures but usually flies work also.

I was just up that way 2 weekends ago. We went the opposite dirrection though. We went up to Frances Lake and did well. The biggest brookie caught was about 16 or 17 inches and the smallest one was about 11 inches. We caught a total of 12 in about 2 hours and we were not really trying that hard. We were just using good ol' rooster tails of various colors. If you went up there, you would definatly need to make it a two day trip unless you really like to hike. If you need any other info let me know.

thanks guys. I think the plan now is sunday we will hike up from two pan to mirror. monday hike to glacier and/or prospect. then tuesday hike down but do a little fishing on the east fork of the lostine on the way. I really wish I could go up to the other lakes mentioned but I don't think time allows. any advise on glacier and prospect would be very helpful though

A friend of mine grew up in Enterprise and has and still hikes all over up there. I will try to get ahold of him and see how the fishing is at Glacier and Prospect.

I was looking some stuff up about the two lakes that you are wanting to know about. It seems like Prospect lake is a better lake for fishing. It said that it's mostly rainbows but the average size is 10-13 inches with some exceding 14 inches. It seems like that whole area up there has been really good fishing this year. My friend said that out of all the times that he has been to Frances Lake that those fish that we caught were some of the better ones that he has seen or heard come out of that lake so frequently. Did you see some of the kokane that have been caught at Wallowa Lake? Two different time this year the state record has been caught. Seems to me that this is the year for fishing up there, so you should be able to do well.

thank you lentz. I did see some pics of those pigs at wallowa. I have read that prospect is known for some big bows so thats what sparked my interest for going over the pass to get there. If you could get some info from your friend, that would be great. thanks again

Frazer Lake is in a breathtaking setting, but you risk your life to fish it. I have never encountered mosquitos anywhere - or everywhere put together - like one finds at Frazier. I believe that they could bleed a nude person dry in 30 minutes if they didn't clog your breathing passages first. They make the Waldo mosquito clouds look like an occasional gnat by comparison.

Glacier via Glacier Pass from Moccasin might be a better choice, unless there have been some hard freezes.

Did I mention that Frazier has some bugs?

There were some skeeters but really not many and i normally get bit if there is even 1 around. I didn't even have any repellent on and never got bit once on this last trip. Now...camping about 1 1/2 months ago up in Starkey was a different story all together.

I'm totally jealous! One of my favorite spots in the world. Last time I was hiking out of Two Pan on a busy weekend was in the early summer a few years ago. It was really unpleasant because there were big trains of pack horses moving up the trail. Made the trail crowded, full of flies/horseflies, and it smelt like you were hiking in a barn that needed a good mucking.

My friend and I decided to deviate from our original plan and turned and went up the Copper Creek trail. One of the best decisions ever. The Copper Creek valley was spectacular and there were no horse teams/camps. The creek is very small and absolutely crystal clear. The small Brookies in it looked like they were floating in the air. Found a spring that just sprang out of the granite that was surrounded by so many different kinds of animal tracks we couldn't identify them all. What was missing were other human footprints.

We hiked further up and along the ridge and dropped down in to Swamp Lake (which isn't too swampy) and caught some nice fish. Further down the canyon were Long Lake and Steamboat Lake, but we never made it that far. I've been told there is good fishing in both. Bugs were bad everywhere, but that's true in any high alpine environment during the early part of summer.

I can't wait for my boys to get just a bit older so that I can take them on that hike! Have a great trip and take lots of pictures!

Just drop a empty hook in any body of water. A brookie will come seaching quickly.
