North santiam trout fishing (fall back plan)
After having a awesome bow hunt experience (detailed in the ifish hunters section under "Elk story, it's the breaks!!) I decided to do a little fishing on the north santiam until my evening hunt.
The water was just beautiful it is really perfect river to fish it has every type of water and it repeats itself every couple hundred yards or so. I dropped down the bank to a nice pool and fished a few cast before hooking a nice 14 inch white fish, my experience with this river once you catch a white fish the hole is fished out of rainbows.
So I moved on fishing every boulder and seam in the river using a bb lead with a size 12 egg hook a d a small salmon egg for bait. This is my only method I like to use in the creeks and small rivers. I hit a strecj of river that looked just horrible for fishing but not catching or even getting a strike I castes out. Half way down the float I hooked a nice fat 11 inch troat.
I went back to camp a cooked it for my camp guests. They really loved it. They have never been caMping yet alone in the woods before it was a real treat.
After a disappointing evening trying to cook a hotdog ending my archery season inwebt to bed. I woke up the next day started a small fire as my guest woke up. Telling them if they fish where and how I showed them they could catch a fish out of the same spot. Well i let two hours pass and no one went out so I stumbled down to the same spot and the first cast, yep I was right caught another 10 inch trout.
The river might be pretty slim pickens for fish but at least I can find fish in a river where people fish for hours with out a nibble.
