Anybody going to the Pendleton Round-Up?

I'm abstaining this year, but usually a regular. We get box seats (the "Respectables"!), my wife is descended from legendary cowpokes.

Always a good time - hope the weather clears up for y'all. Always hit the Bonneville fish ladder on the way home!

On a good year, I will attend both the Oregon Country Fair AND the Round-Up ... for the full cultural spectrum. I've often described the Round-Up as "the Country Fair for rednecks".

As a youngster, I attended the 1957 Pendleton Roundup with my family. Sitting in the top row of the stands watching the Roundup events, we could glance over our shoulders and look right down into "Happy Canyon" where the Indians had their teepees set up. The most memorable event, and one that reminded everyone the Roundup is merely a re-enactment of the Wild West, happened towards the end of the last day. Some guy from Portland had a war surplus P-38 twin engine fighter plane...and he buzzed the stands east to west going flat out...had to be doing 400 mph and cleared our top row by what seemed like only 20 feet. Still remember that plane and its roar distinctly. The horses were cool, too.

Last year, two F-15s buzzed the grandstand during the National Anthem - what a rush!

Well, the Round-Up and Happy Canyon were huge sucesses this year. My wife and I took out three-month-old daughter to the Tuesday night PBR at Happy Canyon and all four days of the Rodeo. I'm a Happy Canyon Volunteer, so I was there until 2:00 AM every night.

I managed to stay out of the Let'Er Buck Room this year, they didn't seem interested in a guy with a baby in a carrier strapped to his chest.

If you've never been to the Round-Up, you need to do it once in your life. For those of you who don't know, the Pendleton Round-Up is the third largest outdoor rodeo, behind the Calgary Stampede and Cheyene Frontier Days. In addition, it is the Rodeo with the most tradition you'll ever see. From the Grand Entry through the Wild Cow Milking it's shear entertainment and action. Call now to get your tickets for next year. Pendleton has something for everyone the second full week in September every year.

By the way, the F-15's were back this year, and the tribute on the 11th brought tears to my eyes.
