Default OTC pain medication question...

Cracked a couple ribs this weekend I figure. Haveing some trouble getting comfortable enough to sleep through the night. Rarely take asparin type meds and tried a couple of brands to relieve the pain and have gotten little or no relief. I dont have much experience with over the counter pain meds so if any of you know of a really good one that works for you please let me know the name of it. Thanks, Mike

About the best OTC for me is 800 mg Ibuprofen (4-200 mg). Costco has the best price. Or a generic at a drugstore.

I've cracked my ribs a time or two...and Ibuprofen works well enough but I've used a rib band with the pills.

Apparently doctors no longer recommend it but I found an old fashioned elastic rib bandage...or strap...about 5" wide...around the cracked area...works well. Really keeps those ribs stationary. My brother recently had a bike wreck and cracked his ribs...his medicos don't recommend the brace due to some cases of fluids collecting in lungs, ect. because of shallow breathing. But if used only at night and not too tight, it might be worth the risk. I'd use one again if I crack my ribs again  .

I lived on 800 mg of ibuprofen every 4 hours when a disc ruptured in my back.

I have to agree with the Ibuprofen. I take 5-200mg. My doctor said 2000-2400mg a day isn't considered an excessive amount. I do think a trip to the dr. is in order though!!

They say that ibufrofen in such "prescription" amounts is probably safe for short-term use. But toxicity is apparently well-documented with long-term use at such high levels. And for those taking daily aspirin, the ibuprofen should not be taken near the time of taking the aspirin, as it apparently cancels out the salutory effects of the aspirin.

Right-on Thumper. That isn't an amount you would be taking on a daily basis for extended periods of time. Just when you have a lot of pain!!
