Question Big Lake Kokes?

I see that Big Lake was stocked with just over 8,000 kokes over a 4 year period from 2000-2003. After that they stopped planting kokanee, but continued with other species.

Does anyone know if there are still kokanne in Big lake (Santiam Pass) and if so how they are doing?

I have never fished this lake or even put a boat in the water. The campgrounds look pretty good but the parts of the shore I have seen look like a minefield of boulders.

Hello Cousin,
(okay the word is out! now everyone knows we are related! speak kindly of me in your pm's)
Big Lake, Wow! Neat lake early and late. popular with the sking crowd in between. The water is fantastically clear and putting in and out is a hallenge compared to say Suttle. I read the same thing and could never find any kokes, of course I heard afterwards they planted a strain called "phantoms". I think there is a few hardy soles that ice fish it and do really well.

i don't think this lake holds healthy populations of anything due to its clarity

We used to fish Blue/Big lake on a regular basis and did very well. Most people looked past this lake as a good fishing area and concentrated on it for its swimming/water skiing opportunities. We fished all over the lake the first few times and finally started to figure out how to get nice stringers of beautiful fish. Haven't fished it in awhile, but near the ski slalum area was the best. Anchor up early in the morning (before skiiers/boaters) and catch limits of Kokanee, rainbows, and some very healthy brookies if I remember correctly. The lake is fairly shallow in a lot of areas, and clear as mentioned, but when the right area was found, still fishing produced a lot of nice/fat fish!
