I have been reading the US government survey on illicit drug use, which can be seen
here.
One disturbing datum jumped out, which I think has importance to any parent. The category of drugs which have the highest number of new users is pain killers, the kind that may be found in your medicine cabinet. This is bad because unlike many of the abused drugs, many of the pain killers are very highly addictive, and have a high degree of risk of overdose.
Most kids get started with these through a medicine cabinet raid in their own home, and homes of relatives and friends.
Something to think about. This is an area of juvenile drug use risk that is very much under our own control.
There's a lot of good data in this study. If you want interesting background on the drug policy issue, take a look.
