Default Favorite hook for Sockeye flies??

I have a question for all of you. What are your favorite flies for Sockeye on the Kenai? I cant stand the long shank hooks as i really felt i lost more fish with them. Also i missed more fish. I got bit this last time on the Kenai and now its time to start tying my own flies. I have hooks for the Russian just looking for hooks for the Kenai. Sockeye are my favorite in Alaska. Thanks!

I use octopus gamai 4/0 or 6/0 hooks, with any color yarn. I use the eggloop knot and weave in the yarn so it will not come off the hook. I use 15 to 20 lb leader, and if I am just meat fishing in a hurry, I will use 40 lb leader. Sometimes it is get my limit and leave as soon as possible. This year with the limit of 3 fish per day some days were short. I change the hooks often to keep them sharp. My weight is hollow core lead on the line just above the swivel and about a 6 foot leader. And no I do not keep foul hooked fish, it is not that hard to get them hooked in the mouth.

I have used octopus style gamakatsu in #4, they grab pretty well, I have also used Tiemco #12 8089 (this is a 'bass bug' hook and the 12's can be hard to find. The 8089 12 has a big bite and is strong and sharp. Gamakatsu B10S is also good. Also look at classic down eye shorter shank hooks. I tie a range of colors from red thread wrapped on the hook to green beads flash etc....keep em small. My huge revelation on sockey came after fishing them for about three years with upstream, I suspect that I lined/flossed the vast majority of legally hooked fish. presentations. When I got in a boat and started swinging little flies through and over pods, instead of nymph style presentations, I started seeing honest to god boils rises follows and grabs. Nothing like silvers but god the sockeye are HOT fish. I think that they are legitimately freaked by things that 'chase' them but will chase things are pulling away from them.

Have you had similar experiences. They can be severely lockjawed.....

Mustad 3908C. For sockeye I tie a shad dart with bead chain eyes. I lived in SE Alaska for 15 years and caught a lot of sockeye on this fly around the state.

not to change the subject, but my question is related to fishing for sockeye.. If you can flyfish for Sockeye, do any of you flyfish for Kokanee by way of the flyrod? If so, what hooks do you use and what is the best way to go about it..?
