Default The Atkins diet nightmare!

Last night I was all alone, and couldn't resist my temptations. I am not on an Atkins diet, but have many friends that are... Thumper? Pete?

Anyway, I drove into town for Pizza Hut's cheese bread sticks. Dang, I love those things!

The fat just drips off of them! Carbs and cheese! What can be better, and how do you guys live without them?

My life would be misery without carbs!

I had a business meeting in Portland and had lunch with Pete. I polished off most of the bread and butter on the table while he ate... meat!

I even ate his potatoes! YUM YUM!

You guys are nuts! You may be healthy, but in my life, it simply could not be done!

Jen

For me, it's temporary as I start the program ... and even with Atkins, carbs aren't forbidden, just restricted. Over time, more carbs are permitted. Life without carbs wouldn't be possible! Imagine Thumper without chocolate cake! Can't do it, can you?

I dunno how Thumper's doing with his diet. Hogmaster still looks pretty skinny I'm told.
I'm holding at 187lbs down from 250 last November even with the foot injury that kept me from running most of the Summer.
I only did the hard core Atkins until I was down enough to run again. I don't see how someone could stay on that diet the rest of their life, it started to drive me nuts after 2-3 months.
I just eat reasonably and still treat myself now and then. I run 3-5 miles a day 4-5X a week so I can stil have a few more carbs than most folks might.
Just a lean- mean rowing machine these days!!

That Lamiglas shirt I have on is a 2XL and it used to be tight, now it feels like a bedsheet...

I never met a carb I didn't like. Especially spuds and bread! I'd go freakin' insane without carbs! Hmmm...I wonder why I'm 50 lbs overweight?
Naw, neoprene shrinks, that's why my waders don't fit anymore!

When I worked hard for a living, I was thin and in wonderful physical condition. I know how much work it is to be in great shape.

I now have a much more sedate, or should I say less physical, occupation. I am no longer buff. I am happier than ever. My back does not hurt all the time. Life is good.

Some day I will lose the Marlboro weight( hey, you try quitting smoking and then stop working hard and NOT gain weight ). But it aint gonna be this week.

Pass the chips.

Mark and the round dog.

Yay Atkins!!!! Down 62 now for over 5 years! I do eat carbs, but control them. If I don't exercise, I don't eat carbs. If I do exercise, I allow myself 40-60 grams per day. And will, for the rest of my life!

(It is a lot easier to have willpower after you lay on the table in the cardiac cath lab and watch your heart attack get fixed with a stent or two. Much easier).

Go Pete!

Protien Power Diet here. I've dropped 35 lbs as of this morning. I have been walking a lot. I was involved in the Portland to Coast and had a blast. I miss the carbs also, but I prefer to be healthy, and at 261 lbs I was not healthy. Now I am at 228 and dropping. When I get to 200 I am gonna stop and start maintainence, keep walking, and fishing of course.

Based on my results and those of my sons who lost 40-50 pounds apiece, if you stay on the diet religiously (20 grams of carbs per day or less) and exercise moderately you will lose 1/2 pound per day, day after day, week after week. If you plot it on graph paper, it is a straight line. Amazing!

Your body needs 51g of carb per day for just brain to function. Think about it. People have had seizures, and kidney problems because of excess nitrogen consumed using this diet it was origionally called the Air Force diet. Be carefull.

My wife is doing a modified Atkins diet. She can only have carbs at one meal and the other two meals are protein only. During her "carb" meal, she has one hour to eat anything she wants...ice cream. Seems to work for her knowing she can choose when to spend her carb ticket each day.

The best way to lose weight is very simple. You must consume less calories than you burn each day. Losing a pound or two a week is a healthy weight loss. Your should also have a balanced diet, do 30 to 40 minutes of cardio 4-5 times a week, and lift weights at least 3 times a week.

I attempted to teach this stuff to people for more than two years. I had 3 different personal training certs. You won't lose the lard unless you are really wanting to. You have to be dedicated to it. Excuses, I have heard them all! I don't care how busy you are, you need to find time to exercise! You will have more energy if you do.

Good luck!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Hogback --- I keep hearing these concerns, but I have not seen them in the medical literature. Do you have any references? I would love to read more on this subject. Thanks.

Look out folks, the planets are aligning, Thumper and Silver agree!

There is a fair bit of literature out there on the low carb diets. The AMA has poo-poohed these diets for years, but has recently had to acknowledge (New York Times Magazine, sometime in July last year) that not only do the low carb diets work, they seem to have a pretty salutory health affect. I know that my blood pressure is lower, my weight is down, and my energy is up. This is a quite common experience.

At the metabolic level, your brain doesn't need dietary carbs, it needs glucose in the bloodstream. This can come from either the carbohydrate cycle, or from protein and ketosis. These are the metabolic processes that underlie the low carb diets. I haven't noticed any brain degeneration while on the diet, but my friends might insist that I drool more now.

On the health effects, there are so many millions of people that have done these diets, that, if they were toxic, we'd have our friends dropping like flies around us. Since they are not, I conclude that maybe it's OK for me to keep losing weight.

15 lbs to go.

My wife and I have been doing the Body for Life program for the last few weeks now. It seems to be a good fit for us. I've lost 6 lbs. and my wife, well, she won't tell me anything else but that she's happy with the progress so far. I like the idea of eating up to 6 times a day but limiting the portion size. I can't eat 6 times a day (usually 4). The weight lifting and aerobics are a good fit. The diet (if you can call it that) has a pretty sound theory behind it: proteins, carbs, and vegetables (and plenty of water).

I can't imagine eating that much protein with the Atkin's diet. My sister started it but switched to the Body for Life program when she started getting grumpy. It can't be too good for you but, then again, if the AMA says it's not too bad then, well, more power to you.
