Default Deschutes?

Wednesday we are taking a family trip over to blue hole. My brother is in a wheelchair and wants to learn to fly fish. Has anyone had any descent success there? Unfortunately the river is closed to angling for chinook above the falls. I really wanted to try to get one on the fly rod this year. Are there any other spots on the river that are easily accessible for people in wheelchairs?

We have been catching fish since early July. I don't know about the wheelchair access but seems like there a was a thread a while back about how to get an exception to fish from an anchored boat. Maybe do a little research and you can go for a boat ride. Deffinately the way to go on the deschutes.

Thanks Sam and happy birthday to you. I know about the disabled angling liscence, but he won't get it. There would be another issue in trying to get him into a boat. He's a big guy and he would need help getting in and out. As far as hiring a guide, that's a no go. We are both broke college students so banking it is the only option for now.

Better check river conditions if you are planning to fish below the White River mouth. Word is that it is blown out and pretty much zero visiblity
clear to the Columbia. If we continue to have warm temps on the mountain it could be out for some time. Check with the Maupin fly shops
for info.

I'm pretty sure that this is the case. I've been trying to get my buddy out there to do it (The Blue Hole is such a small part of water though). We floated the McKenzie and he loved it. He didn't fish at all, but had a great time regardless.

Thanks for the suggestions. I may not be going now. The brown stuff has hit the fan bigtime!

Just got back from the Deschutes. The mouth area had poor visability. The only people I saw catch fish were using spinners. There are definitely fish around, but couldn't get any to bit my line. I found that the area just above the campground had better visability than further up because the river is wider toward the mouth. Had a great time anyway enjoying the outdoors. A beautiful day!

Best of luck to all,

Greg

The river below the White has about 24" of visibility tonight. Lots of fish moving right now through Sherars. The water off the Handicap Ramp at the Blue Hole is not fly water. Too deep. Might do well with spinners, wobblers, or plugs. There are campers in the lower camp spot probably through the weekend so is tough to get down there to fish. I am hoping that BLM makes the blue hole a day use area only after Labor Day. I heard some guys saying they were going to ask BLM to do that. Some of the local unemployed set up camp in there for about a month and run everyone else out. I am sure if you thought it was a good idea to make it a day use only after Labor Day, a call to BLM would help that happen.
