Awesome Montana Fire Starter Photo 2003
Dean (Born To Fish) emailed me this awesome photo this morning.
This small note was attached:
Believed to be public domain photo from a firefighter in Montana. Too cool
not to share.
(See attached file: fire_starter.jpg)
Had to edit it down from 114kb's and hope it is still as awesome. Thanks for sharing Dean.

Re: Awesome Montana Fire Starter Photo 2003
I've already sent the original photo to me which is 118kb's to a couple ifisher's on request and a couple that didn't request it.
If you want the original larger file just post your request or email me and I will send it to you.
Of course some don't realize if you want the same pic on ifish all you have to do (with windows opperating systems) is right click on the pic and click "send to" and pick "my documents" or where ever.
It is truly an amazing shot. Might become my wall paper. Have to email Born to Fish and see if a larger file is available.

Re: Awesome Montana Fire Starter Photo 2003
Dan, thanks for posting the fire picture for me. The jpg file I sent you in my original email is all that I've got [for now], so that's as big as it gets.
There's no question that it is an awesome piece of work and perhaps will become the hallmark representation of this year's western fire season [too soon to tell because there's still so much going on and we're no where near the end of the season].
This photo, IMHO, is second only to the photo that became a representative for the 2000 fire season - anyone remember the spectacular photo of the two elk standing in the East Fork of the Bitterroot River with the hillside in the background fully in flame? That, my friends was a real piece of work taken by a fire behavior analyst working on that incident. That picture held particular significance to me because I spent 4 weeks that summer working fires "down the road" on the West Fork. We had similar flaming scenes in our area, but couldn't get any elk or moose to pose in the foreground.
At any rate, this sunset/lightning picture that Dan posted for you all to enjoy was reportedly taken by a fire fighter on one of the Montana fires this year. I don't have anymore specifics on it but undoubtedly will find out more as it circulates through the "fire community."

Re: Awesome Montana Fire Starter Photo 2003
Yeh Dan, I think I've still got the elk picture stored somewhere as well. When I first got it in 2000 I took the file on diskette to a local photo lab hoping to get a poster-sized enlargement for myself and family members. As it turned out, the resolution, and other aspects of it were not appropriate to large formats of that nature so the biggest we were ever able to get were maybe something like 10x15 prints and even then, the detail wasn't crisp enough to suit my taste.
At any rate, not certain if you'd run into the same problem trying to enlarge this photo. It does, however, print out nicely on a good lazer jet printer on normal paper size set at "landscape" formate.

Re: Awesome Montana Fire Starter Photo 2003
Yup Dan....that's the one I spoke of, taken on the East Fork.
I watched the same kind of fire scene work it's way down the slope across from our fire camp but we were on the West Fork. Fortunately it never jumped the river over to our side. Particularly striking during the evening. Didn't get much sleep for a few nights due to the chocking smoke and anxieties. That summer was a very humbling time for many fire fighters and this summer is quite similar in many respects.
Dan, thanks for finding that old photo; it brings back many memories. By the way, that same scene was rephotographed two years to the date afterwards and it was amazing how much the area was recovering. Oh course many of the old snags were still in evidence to remind us of what happened in the area. Wish I had kept that more recent photo.
By the way Dan, I'm very happy to see that you are still counting - I'm proud of your accomplishment. Keep up the good work.
Dean

Re: Awesome Montana Fire Starter Photo 2003
Fishisabonus - right on there's a lot of folks working their butts off out there and have been doing so for quite a long time.
Just heard on the news that we had another vehicle accident involving 6 fire fighters somewhere in the Hells Canyon area - their van apparently left the road, ending up 200 feet downslope. Fortunately no fatalities and no life threatening injuries. Sad. So soon after the accident in eastern Oregon that took the lives of 8 firefighters returning home from a fire in Idaho. :depressed:
There's a flurry of activity these days at NIFC [Nat'l Interagency Fire Center] in Boise as 50-60 Australian firefighters are being prepared to go out on the line and help where they can. Way to go, Mate!

Re: Awesome Montana Fire Starter Photo 2003
hooksetter,
Haven't looked at this thread for a long time but just seen your post. Looked up the thread for a charter guy and gal that I'm sending it to. Hope they join ifish because they are really good people and good "catcher's".
If you haven't hooked your son's PC up to the net yet, you can simply right click on the Montana fire and save it and then put it on a floppy (remember those things?) and load it onto your son's PC without hooking his to the net.
I didn't realize it 'till now but with a right click on the pic one of the many options that come up is "set as background" and with one single click I have a new background pic on my PC. That is on Window's opporating systems anyway (well at least XP that I use). I get lost on Mac's especially when looking for the right click.
