Default Mt Angel Oktoberfest

Just to let you all know. One of the best parties in the state is coming up. Mt. Angel Oktoberfest starts on Sept 11 and runs through the 14th. If anyone wants tips on the best way in and out of town or the "secret" parking spots. Or if you want to meet for a bier, PM me.

Mt. Angel Oktoberfest

sorry woody, I am still hung over from 1989, the last time I partied it up at Mt. Angel. The last thing I remember was there was this girl and she had a sticker...

Ahhh, the stickers. I almost forgot about them. We only go on Sunday, now, and most of that is over and done with (except for the litter of "hot beef" stickers on the ground).

It is a great time, though. It is hard to beat the buffet...

Woody, I will be there. Grew up in Mt. Angel. My Grandad was one of the founding fathers. I love that place but would not want to live there. Used to buy beer at the Marquam tavern when I was 18. (shhh) Oh yeah those hamburgers at the Marquam Tavern are the best. Oof Dah!!!

Sorry guys, no more stickers. I guess the city got tired of the cleanup days, and weeks after.

For the last week or so,slowly growing out of a whisper, the faint sounds of the chicken dance have been playing over and over in my mind. I knew that Oktoberfest must be near!

What is the must see and where is the must eat at the Mnt. Angel Oktoberfest?

Please tell me more about this buffet.

I have a handful of coins from the past three years. I don't know if they are usable but I want to keep at least one from each year I go.

That's funny Gus? Actually the (munks) monks came later after the settlers. The land was owned by some Catholic hating pioneers and had to be puchased covertly and then given the Monastery. My grandad was one of the purchasers.

If there is a "buffet" there it's news to me. I think what Tagster must be refering to is the abundance of good food in the booths lining all of the streets in town.

As far as "must eats"....Corn on the cob, O-fest sausage, cabbage rolls, berliner sandwich, elephant ears, scones, the list goes on and on. Just go hungry and walk the streets and graze. When your full, go have a couple of beers and listen to polka. Yes, polka. It kinda grows on you after a while.

As far as geting into town and beating the traffic, try coming in from hwy 213, instead of overused route 214 from Woodburn or Silverton. 213 runs from Oregon City to Silverton and then into Salem. If you come from 213 you come into Mt Angel from the east avoiding most of the mess in the main part of town.

And please don't drive drunk, besides being stupid and dangerous, it could be very expensive. Every cop from every little town in a 20 mile radius gets hired on during O-fest. I've seen patrol cars lined up 4 or 5 in a row on the roads out of town pulling over drunks as they leave the beer garden.

I usually arrive with a full wallet and an empty belly. They are reversed when I leave.

Thanks for the tips. I was kinda looking forward to a buffet... that sounds really good right now since I brought pb&j for lunch today.

Woody, there used to be a buffet at the monestary.

I think that it was there anyways...on the west side of the strip about half way down.

Great German food (of course)...

I've never been to the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest, but it always looks like fun ... but I hear stories about long lines and crowds and parking troubles that keep me from making the commitment to go. Is there a good time to go? A bad time? Things to avoid?

Avoid Friday and Saturday night. All of the 20 somethings headed for the main beergarden make it pretty crazy. Thursday, opening day, is a pretty good time to go.

Avoid the main beer garden. Unless you like the shoulder to shoulder meat market scene. The microgarden has a great beer selection and the winegarden has several great german beers, wine of course, and a pretty good band that they fly in from Germany.

If you don't want to drink, just wander the streets and try the great food. There is also a lot of great craft booths, not the usual festival stuff.

We go every year and always have a great time. We never go to the beer garden, we go to the wine garden instead. There is an older crowd there and the entertainment is always fantastic. NO stickers to deal with either. Went last year and ate 4 cabbage rolls, two sausage dogs with kraut and a funnel cake! Man is that grub good! Ended up sleeping alone for a couple of days....
