Default Coho in the Yamhill?

Every now and then my employer sends me on a boat ride to take water samples. The other day I ended up on the Yamhill, with a friend that works for the Yamhill Basin Council.
To make a long story short, my friend said he ran into a biologist that said he identified three or for dead coho, above the 22 bridge at Willamina.
I knew that steelhead came up the Yamhill, I've seen em caught in years past. But coho too, I think thats great.

Interesting. I guess that surprises me to hear of coho in the Yamhill. But what surprises me more is that it is awfull early to hear of coho way the heck up there this early dead or alive!

Sure they weren't dead summers?

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Sorry, I should have clarified. The biologist found the dead coho on the bank in the wintertime.

Now that would make sense. Wild coho spawn very late in the winter usually entering the rivers around November and December and spawning in February-March I believe.

I see that river in the winter time sometimes when driving through or visiting a friend in Willamina. Looks like some good drift fishing if there are any fish to catch.

I don't know much about wild and hatchery coho outside the Oregon coast, SW Washington and the Clackamas River. Curious to know if there is a small run of natives in there or if they might have been wild or hatchery strays.

I don't know what the Yamhill is being managed for but that river intrigues me and would be interested in knowing. I believe it has some wild winters in it.
