Re: Hwy 20 closed to all Fire
I-84 is a good detour. Coming back from Tillamook last weekend, I had the cruise set at 70, and everyone was passing me like I was sitting still. Apparently the 65 mph speed limit is for out of staters  .

Re: Hwy 20 closed to all Fire
84 is probably the best bet. It'd probably be faster than 58. Even if you take the Crescent cut-off road you still wind up about 50 miles south of bend on 97. Not to mention you'll lose about an hour due to road work on 58 during the week. :depressed:

Re: Hwy 20 closed to all Fire
As of today, ODOT has no plans to open the hwy untill after this time tomorrow if all goes well. The fire crossed the road and is spreading. The road is closed eastbound at the junction...

Re: Hwy 20 closed to all Fire
You can drive to Eugene from Corvallis on I5. (If you are a true Beaver this will be the most difficult part of the trip). Then east on 126 to 242,the old McKenzie Hwy. It goes to Sisters and should be open.

Re: Hwy 20 closed to all Fire
lost _ sailor (sorry, I wanted to get your name spelled correctly), get real! Have you seen the forest floor, guess not. Let give you a big clue, It's full as a match box waiting to go off. Call me right winged ( you'd be the first) but kiss the middle east good bye and clean up the forest. Oh, let me add my son is fighting forest fires and has just been sent home from Montana with heat stroke, so I just might be a little touchy.
*edited out an uncalled name calling of lost_sailor. Rude on my part! Sorry lost-sailor my bad.

Re: Hwy 20 closed to all Fire
Don't feel bad about getting stuck traveling and stopped by a Forest fire. We drove up to Kamiah Idaho on Tuesday for a week rest on the Clearwater River. Got 15 miles from Kamiah and were stopped by a closed road. Major fire of about 7000 acres that was within 2-3 miles of Kamiah. Seems like some jerk kid got mad at his wrecker car and tried to burn it up and commenced to set the woods on fire. I would love to deal with him. Lots of traffic were turned around. This is the road that goes over Lolo Pass to Missula. So we will head down to the coast.
Only good thing is that we went back to Lewiston and stayed at the RV park at the Clearwater River Casino. Nice shaded, green park and only a block from the casino. Went and had dinner there (steak bites, baked potato, bread and salad)for $6.00 and won about $200.00. So happy went back next morning for their $1.00 breakfast, two eggs, hashbrowns, toast and a slab of ham. Oh yes, I won $40 on a penny maching and wife won $24.00.

Re: Hwy 20 closed to all Fire
Just got back from the coast and by the looks of the valley the whole place is burning, what is up with having to burn all the fields at once and add the forest fires on top of that it is just terrible out there.
Hope they catch the fire bug too and stick them right in the middle of the blaze to try and control it!!

Re: Hwy 20 closed to all Fire
I was headed north on I-5 very early this morning after having been out of town for 3 days and I come up on this ODOT sign that says "Hwy 20 closed - Use 58" and I'm thinking, how will I get to Lebanon since 20 is "The" road so I pull over and look at the map. 58 is not an option for me so I call the ODOT recording and get the skinny. No problems getting home.

Crambone, have they been burning more fields this week? I thought they were done with that. One of the few things I dislike about this area is the air quality this time of year.

Re: Hwy 20 closed to all Fire
Hey FS
sorry about the delay on this reply but yes when we came home there were at least 5 different fires that we could see from HWY 34 right before the freeway I really love the valley but this time of year really bites
