Re: National Debt Clock
LS,kinda scary stuff isn't it? The republicans see nothing wrong with deficit spending. Don't worry be happy. I think we've been down this road before and the fix will be on election day Nov. 2004.

Vote early. Vote often.
Every war in our history has resulted in substantial deficit spending. Remember 9/11?

Re: National Debt Clock
Oh how we love credit cards. Don't worry......our kids and grandkids can pay it off. Yes indeed, family values at work.
PS Thumper: war costs = 70 billion
deficit for FY 2003 = 455 billion
Do you see a discrepancy?

Re: National Debt Clock
racking up massive amounts of debt IS a republican "recovery".
it also appears to be the only economic policy that they know.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">I remember 9/11 quite well. It is now pretty clear to nearly everyone but George W that Iraq had nothing to do with it, and indeed posed no threat to the US. See article in Washington Post, reprinted in Seattle Times, See it here. The measures proposed to actually fight terrorism, the Homeland Security Blanket, has been left unfunded by the Republican congress, and ignored by the Republican president. The military effort that might actually find Bin Laden, eg., the war in Afghanistan, is being neglected by the press and the Administration. It appears that we actually had him in our sights, and the CIA wouldn't pull the trigger (article in last week's New Yorker) because they were afraid of putting their agents at risk.
While we're remembering history, wars, and deficits, let's also remember that during all previous wars, presidents and congress felt it prudent to increase taxes to cover the expense of the war.
I don't mind a good conservative viewpoint, but let's at least keep it congruent with the facts. I also wish the Republicans would at least act a little sheepish at being the biggest spendthrifts in the history of the world.

Re: National Debt Clock
Mr Bush has a 59% approval rating. Americans understand the need to invest in strength and take action to protect our national interests. He will be re-elected in a walk.
Wanna bet? The losers donate it to Ifish.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">And just think, the ostracized and hated Bill Clinton had a higher rating than that most of the time, even during much of "Monica-Gate".
Wouldn't be terribly impressed with 59%

Re: National Debt Clock
If the Republicans tried to do something about it, it would be political suicide. The Democrats would say that they were trying to keep old folks from getting their medicine, kids from getting their education, poor people from having food to eat, etc.
It's the old guns and butter thing. The Democrats would say the Republicans were cutting the butter in favor of the guns. They can't cut the guns without alienating the people who elected them. So they cut neither. The Democrats would do no different. They certainly wouldn't cut the butter, and any cuts to the guns would go to more butter so they could strengthen their policical base. The fact of the matter is, we can afford more of neither guns nor butter, but it would be political suicide to face this fact. The voters, being educated by TV, prefer fantasy to reality, so they vote for the fantasy. Don't blame the political parties, either Democrat or Republican. Blame the voters. We put ourselves in this situation, and we are the only ones who can get us out. Neither the Democrats or the Republicans can save us. They merely reflect the voting patterns of the American public, which is entirely to blame for our situation. A pox on both their houses, and the horse they rode in on, if I may be permitted to mix metaphors here.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">I have to disagree. We can indeed afford both guns and butter, much as the home purchaser can logically afford to finance his home purchase at a reasonable interest rate. Deficit financing is little different than mortgage financing. Perhaps not ideal, but not economically disastrous at all.
Many economists feel that the worst economic policy would be to continually run a surplus, as many economists also feel that the nation's economy would slow if people only paid cash for their capital purchases.

Re: National Debt Clock
drall99,you mean spending money we don't have. If you or I were to deficit spend, say write checks on an account that had no money in it,we'd be arrested for passing bad checks. This administration can't be arrestd, but we can vote.
