Question Gill Net Schedule for the Columbia?

I have plans to fish the Columbia either on Thursday or Friday this week, depending on if I can confirm when/if any gill nets go into the river near St. Helens.

Can anyone tell me....
a) where I can find out the gill net schedule?
b) if the gill nets capture just chinook or chinook and coho?
c) what your experience is fishing the Big C after a gill net has gone in?

PMs or posts are equally welcome.

Thanks,

Piscatus

P.S. This is not a pro/con gill netter thread - just trying to determine the best chance for me to go anchor fishing for some chrome.

Here's my post in the OFFICIAL GILLNET THREAD pinned to the top, #700:

*******************
Non-Indian Fisheries
Fall Chinook Commercial (GILLNET) Fishery
• Adopted non-Indian commercial fishing periods as follows:
7 PM Tuesday August 4(12 hrs)
7 PM Thursday August 6 (12 hrs)
7 PM Sunday August 9 (12 hrs)
8 PM Tuesday August 18 (10 hrs)
8 PM Thursday August 20 (10 hrs)
8 PM Sunday August 23 (10 hrs)
8 PM Tuesday August 25 (10 hrs)
8 PM Thursday August 27 (10 hrs)

* It's midsummer with high water temperatures, but there are NO minimum soak times to reduce mortality on under and over-sized sturgeon; plus the sturgeon the gillnetters continue to encounter once they reached their individual allowed sturgeon limit during this summer season.

* Those non-clipped coho that anglers have been releasing to head up the Columbia are now legal for the gillnets to target.

Is this any way to manage the resource?

GaryK,

You forgot to mention the Steelhead kill that's going to take place once they are thrown back over the side into the 80 degree water.

Are these nets allowed to drop anywhere or is this a Youngs Bay net schedule? I will be fishing hammond area tomorrow and i am curious whether or not these will be in the main river.

That is for the mainstem CR.

And there's been an in-season change in the areas being netted:

The (gillnetters) will move upstream and fish from the Kalama River mouth to Beacon Rock from 8 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 18-19, 20-21 and 23-24.

The fleet will move farther upstream and fish from the mouth of the Lewis River to Beacon Rock from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Aug. 25-26 and 27-28.

well,i was impressed today.forgot the nets were in last nite.launched out of camas this morn.had to wait for a opening on the ramp cause the net boats were either pulled all the way up the launch ramps.unloading there fish in to pickups.or just tied up in the launching lanes.i follow the rules that say launch your boat.move it to stageing area for no more than 15 min.i can do this even when i'm fishing and launching alone.i guess the net boats dont have to follow the ruels that are posted.they all seemed to have lots of fish.when i went down river after i got my boat in the water.there was a dozen or so dead salmon floating probally did'nt have anything to do with the nets though

I believe those changes in post #5 above were made after and in response to the gillnets taking more than expected in the estuary.

They were out in force this morning. Launched out of 42nd and ran up to 205. Passed 5 and saw another 4-5 upsteam.

Is there a max length for their nets? One must of had 500 yards out. I almost cut it in half running up in the dark.

What is the chance that they will be done with their quota before they see the end of their schedule? Aren't they close now? I guess will see when the numbers come in tommorrow?

Two full size trucks full of salmon taking up the the two east launch lanes at Camas this AM.
Full totes of fish on the dock and gill net boats heavy with fish plugging the ramp @ 6:00 AM.
Gill netters were grab assing and teasing one another about who was going to clean this guys truck and who was going to clean the boat.
Never seen so many happy netters in my life.
I would say at least 500 big fish per truck of the two plugging the east lanes.
Talked to one of the net boys and he said they did good, Real Good!
Not knocking the gill netters just wish they would not plug the launch lanes.

Heard over a 1000 kings taken above Kalama overnight. Not sure if that is the whole fleet or just a localized area being sampled.

I wonder what % of their catch are Tules? The N.F Lewis has been shut down for fall and late run kings for the past several years to protect the run. They should if they must net, be baned from netting below the Lewis. But then again it requires a little common sense.

As I was heading down to Astoria on Tuesday, just west of Claskanie...I must have passed about 15-20 net boats heading east on Hwy 30. They are uggggllly in more ways than one. Wed eve there were maybe 4-5 net boats in Youngs Bay. By the way, where does Youngs Bay end and the Columbia begin...

Obviously that was just a sample.... the full-fleet number will astound you!

http://www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/OSCR...ugust_2009.pdf

7500 kings at 21# avg comes out to 157,500 pounds of dead chinook.

Not a bad haul for ONE opener.

Just to put things into perspective, total season-to-date B-10 landings for the sport fleet thru Monday is right at 3900 fish.

They were still netting them at 5:30 this am at K bar. It turned out to be the slowest day with only mabey 1 or 2 nooks on the beach and a big zero for steelhead. I think they keep the nets out till Sunday....can anyone confirm this?

But don't forget the recreational dead Chinook allocations either. Salmon power relative to fun is just gaining steam.

10,700 for B10 (not to mention 120,000 coho)
15,000K+ for Tongue Point/Rocky Point to Bonneville
A couple grand from Bonneville to Pasco

The decision on all CR seasons is on the Columbia River Compact site. It includes the phone number for updates: (971) 673-6000

Thanks

The netters are in tonight and Thursday in Zone 5 only ( from the dam downstream a few miles. No lower river curtains. Still, I don't understand. Ban 'em!

Englund's Anglers have already taken 27,000 Chinook. Only 35,000 have passed the dam. What is Englund and his yes men thinking? Now they get tonight and Thursday as well!!! Darn shame...

The nets will be in Tomorrow night 8/28/11 and on the 30th. Looks like zones 4 & 5. They have already been in this month on the followng dates:
8/4, 8/16, 8/18, 8/21, 8/23, 8/25. There must be an enormous bycatch/Kill of A and B run steelhead and coho. Over the last 2 weeks.
