Henry's Fork isn't too far away and will test your skills. Also, there are some backwoods lakes on the unimproved road on the John D. Rockefeller memorial Parkway that come in South of West Yeloowstone between Teton and Yellowstone. Great brookie lakes. The Madison and Gibbon are great streams as well. Find lakes that hold big browns later in your trip. The browns will move up in the rivers and streams in the Fall (may be too early). Throw big ugly, flashy buggers and hold on! Best example of this is the Lewis Lake and Shoshone Lake feeders. Just below Lewis Lake, the browns stack up in the fall and the same with the Lewis Shoshone channel. South Fork of the Snake below the dam has been fishing well using hoppers. Fish the foam lines.

Ditto on the south fork of the Snake. Also, if you're interested in fishing still water, Henry's Lake would definitely be worth looking at.

Do a search or look through the archives from 3-4 weeks ago. There were some extensive threads about this very topic that will probably be helpful.

Some good suggestions so far. Get a guide book. Many out there...

Some of my favorite areas around there:

-Box Canyon drift on the Henry's Fork
-streamer/muddler fishing below lower Mesa Falls
-Harriman Ranch water
-Henrys Lake stillwater
-N. Fork Shoshone River between the E entrance to the Nat. Park and Cody for Cutts; I dont fish there unarmed though; they relocate problem grizzlies to that area out of the park. I nearly had to drop the hammer on a real grumpy one a few years back.

If you fisih the South Fork, give yourself a couple days. The flows from the dam vary quite a lot with downstream water demands. When the level rises/falls it affects the fishing, being on the river for a couple days helps insure you'll be there for some stable flow.

re: Yellowstone, some of the large lakes like Lewis are sleepers, can produce fine fly fishing.
