I got WORMS!
This may have been posted already, but just in case. There is a nasty worm being spread around. Both my machines were infected. If your computer starts rebooting itself, you may be infected.
Go here to find out how to get rid of it...

Re: I got WORMS!
yeah, me too. I have spent the last hour trying to remove this damn thing.
The hard part is trying to download the patch before it shuts you down.
My fault for not updating when i should have.

Re: I got WORMS!
i've got a unix dialup box that serves up the internet for my windoze PCs. it's got this neat little setting called "deny incoming all". in four years of internet i have yet to get hit with any worms or virii (knock on wood). it pretty much makes me invisible to these sorts of things.
for anyone out there i would recommend zone alarm ( www.zonelabs.com). their base model is free and it works. it takes a little time to configure but it is an excellent firewalling program.

Re: I got WORMS!
Again I'm astonished that Microsoft can be the industry leader with such shabby products.

Re: I got WORMS!
I am in the fumigation biz. I have been paid to kill worms before. But I do not get to use cool stuff like " Worm Blaster".
Maybe I should get a new job.

Re: I got WORMS!
The worm got me. If I had been vigilant(updatng patches, scanning for virus often) I would be typing this. My friend that helped me also reccommends zonealarm.
Feels good to be back at it!

Re: I got WORMS!
Maybe the reason why Microsoft is so profitable is because they save tons of money by not spending any time on security. I usually run Linux and when I do I have no worries about worms or other malicious crap but lately I've been stuck in the Windows world and I'm hating every second of it.

Re: I got WORMS!
Husker, I had the same problem until I enabled the personal firewall that comes with XP. Once I did that, I had about an extra 5 minutes before shutdown. I also found out that if I ignore the "send microsoft the error report" message, I would gain an extra two or three minutes.
Also, make sure that you disable the restore function before you go through everything.
Just a thought...

Re: I got WORMS!
I have 2003 AntiVirus and Firewall and received a nice surprise. I was gone out of state for 5 days. While gone i totally closed down my computer and shut off all power to it. Guess what? My automatic definitions update was shut off and when i turned the computer on i got zapped befor the computer had a chance to automatically up my system. Lesson learned and will not be forgotten. Symantic has an easy fix. Takes a few min for the patch and then the fix it tool takes care of the virus real quick.
