Problem: Honey bees, and hummy feeders
I have a problem and I don't want to upset my neighbors by calling them yet.
I noticed that they have a honey bee farm now.
Problem is, the bees have discovered my hummingbird feeders. Sometimes there are 100 bees covering my entire feeder now, and the hummingbirds have been chased off.
Not only am I terribly alergic to bee stings, I miss my hummingbirds and cannot deal with taking the feeders down. :depressed:
Besides that, they are so covered with bees that I can't take them down!
Does anyone have suggestions? I don't want to kill the bees, as I know they are valuable insects.
Jen

We have thought and thought and thought....
maybe they need to put up their own hummingbeebird feeders. And we empathize with you.
Get some pictures of those bees all over the feeders...you know..before and after.

Re: Problem: Honey bees, and hummy feeders
Jennie,
All of the hummingbird feeders that I have owned have had bee guards (screens) on them to prevent the bees from getting to the nectar. Short of getting rid of the hives, there is little that your neighbor can do to prevent the bees from visiting. Here is a website that may help -
Humming bird feeders with bee guards
Bee Guards
I haven't ever done business with this website but the pictures should give you an idea of what to look for.
Good Luck,
D.

My feeders have bee guards. These bees just cluster around the whole thing like it was their Mama!

How about setting out your own bee box? Maybe you can sell the honey back to your neigbbors.

What I like to do with bees is kind of fun. It involves a can of hair spray and a cigarette lighter.

I would recommend bee guards also. But I don't have any feeders, to speak of from practicle experience.

Tanner! Bees are very helpful to many things. I'd never kill them! A yellow jacket maybe, but... a honey bee? NOT!

Jennie,
Try the Oregon State Beekeepers Association for more info
OSBA
They have an "Ask The Beekeeper" section where you can email/post questions. Or they have a Tillamook branch listed and you could contact someone there. Hope that helps

Yeah Tanner, how crass! You should use a Bee-Bee gun instead!
(Gotta admit it, I'm deathly allergic to stings.)
