Help with XP search
I'm not much for fluff, and even though I think the little doggy that aids my searches on XP is cute, he's USELESS!
Here's the deal: I have a folder on my computer with member information that I use often, to aid people who need help. I could do this online, as it is also online, but having a dial up, often it is easier for me to have this file handy and searchable, offline.
So... I used to be able to go, in 98, to the search feature, browse to the folder to search, and search the folder for a .cgi file that I needed, not by the name of the folder or file, but by knowing the user's member name. I had all .cgi files to open in notepad so that I could read them.
It was the second line on the old search program, under advanced. To search the words inside the file, rather than the file name.
So, I'd type in, for instance, "Fishin Fool", and I'd get every file that had Fishin Fool in it, find the info he needed, and give it to him.
This one, for some reason, won't do that! I've used the advanced, and even type in ifish, which I KNOW is in there, several times, and it comes up with no results found! HELP! I need this to run ifish!

Re: Help with XP search
Here is how I did it, in 95, and then 98, second:
I went to
START
Find
Files or folders
skip the Named line, and go to
Containing text: type in the text I'm searching for
then, "look in" the folder that I browse to for the search,
Then, press FIND NOW!
and it workie!
Why XP no workie?

Re: Help with XP search
Start
Search
All files and folders
Type info in "A word or phrase in the file" box.
This should work unless the file is "Hidden"
You can go to the advanced section and check the hidden folders option.
Also it can search tape back up if you check the box.

Re: Help with XP search
Silly question, are you putting the text to search for in the "A word or phrase in the file:".
You can still specify something in the filename, such as an extension, and then search for the word or phrase. Like *.CGI for the filename, and then "Fishin Mission" in the Word or phrase box.

Re: Help with XP search
It still doesn't find anything I need.
I tried the word firstcast.. I know that firstcast is registered. No firstcast. :depressed:

Re: Help with XP search
Try searching for "*.cgi" without the quotation marks.

Re: Help with XP search
Don't know what's up Jennie, I just tried it on a Document I am working on for school and it worked. If you go down to "Look In", You can browse to the folder you need to search.... It's at the bottom of the drive list.... Also, make sure you are searching "All files and folders".
If you search all drives, the search could be a lengthy one if you are searching for a word or phrase in a file.

Re: Help with XP search
Yip, I am only searching the one folder.
Oh well... If you can't make it work, look for another way!

Re: Help with XP search
1. Turn it off
2. Turn it on
3. Try again
4. If it doesn't work, repeat #1 and GO FISH

Re: Help with XP search
Usually if you bring up the file manager, then hit F3, This will bring up the search menu. But I'm not at home right now, I'm on windows 2000, But I'll check it when I get home. have this cleared up in no time.

Re: Help with XP search
Whoooooooo hoooooooooo!
I fixed it!
It wouldn't search .cgi files, because it is an unknown file extension!
Geesh! Windows XP doesn't know what a .cgi file is???? Even I know that!
Just as I was going to call and pay for tech support... I found it!
Anyway, finally found it here!
I fixed it, and if you are having the same problem, if I can fix it, so can you! I'm a search master now! All my files are back! YAAYAYAYAYYAYA!
