Metolius Report
We "family camped" on the Metolius four days last week, so I got some quality time with the fly rods.
I was looking forward to catching some bull trout, after landing three of them on my last trip, two years ago. That was swinging streamers at dusk. That didn't work at all this time.(?) But on our last afternoon in the bright sunshine, there was a guy across the river who waded in "wet" to the waist (must be tough) and caught a bull trout swinging a white streamer behind a stonefly nymph. He described it as making the bull trout think the other fish (streamer) was distracted while chasing the stonefly and would be easy pickin's for the bull trout. That's assuming trout think. Anyway, it worked.
I had fun with a couple of big rainbows. Only one hookup, but lots of drama watching the big 'bow rise up to inspect the fly, then turn away. These were nice fish, in about 4' of water, about 8' away from me, so I could see the fish all the time. (I had no "luck" casting to rising fish during a nice hatch one afternoon.)
My hookup came after a strike on the dry golden stonefly that missed, but the fish got hooked on the nymph dropper. I suppose that is like "flossing", but I'll take it.
The Metolius is a treasure. I love it!
