Re: Another New Fire
from Bend.com
July 29 - As temperatures in the region quickly zoomed toward 100 degrees yet again Tuesday, Central Oregon firefighters rushed to the scene of a small, new wildfire reported at midday, southeast of Paulina Lake.
Two "task forces" totaling 10 engines and 40 firefighters were dispatched, along with a 20-person smokejumper crew, to Fire No. 555, reported shortly after noon at an estimated 4 acres, about five miles south-southeast of Paulina and East lakes.
By mid-afternoon, it had grown to at least 10 acres in the Kweo Butte area, east of La Pine and north of the Lake County border, said Jean Nelson-Dean of the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center in Prineville.
Two air tankers, a lead plane and helicopters also were being dispatched to the fire, which was south of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument and "not really accessible" by road, Nelson-Dean said. No immediate threat to structures was reported, but the fire was "spotting" as it burned towards the south, she said.
Forecasters predicted temperatures at or above the century mark on both sides of the Cascades Tuesday and said records for the day would fall in many locations. A tiny cooldown was predicted Wednesday, with many places still approaching or topping 100.
