Friday one of my Labradors was delivering a litter of puppies. As fate would have it she has a really nice large dark red puppy (In the lab breeders world we call them Fox Reds, Kinda rare). Well it was still born not breathing or moving. After two minutes with mom we decided it was time to take matters into our own hands. The wife is on the phone to our vet and I start doing puppy CPR. A slight breathe in the nose and then rub the chest cavity. Once the vet is on the phone she has us start doing it differently here is her advice:
Take the puppy and hold it in both hands on its back.
Lift the puppy to you face and sling it down towards you knees a few times. Nothing abrupt but with some force you are trying to force any liquid from his lungs. You then start massaging and rubbing the chest gently a few times.
Next after doing that a few times you pinch the skin at the back of the neck this causes a gag reflex on the puppy. Repeat for as long as you want We try this for perhaps five minutes and then call the vet again and ask about bringing it in at this point we are getting the gag reflexes but no sound and not breathing. She says there is a better chance of survival if we bring him in. so the 20 minute ride to the vet took fifteen minutes that day. About half way to the vet while still doing the CPR we get our first whimper right after a neck skin pinch. By the time we arrive at the vets that little guy is letting the world know that it is lunch time. The vet takes him in and checks him out gives him a shot in case he has pressure on his brain and some antibiotics just in case. Bottom line is that he lived and we have our first Fox Red out of our own breeding if he makes the grade at 8 weeks. At Three days he is looking as good as or better than his litter mates. This procedure really worked for us.

Oh Thumper! We are going to start taxing at a higher rate for any homes over 1600 sq ft in Cowlitz and Clark Cos. A lab gets you an extra 1000 sq ft tax break! Hah!
Good job Dan and educational too!

You look to me man like you are well on your way. Why not do it yourself. Read some books. Check ebay and get waterdog by Richard wolters. the other thing is join on of the retriever clubs and train with them. Labs are generally forgiving when training. Just remember not to use to heavy a hand and keep it fun. 98% of the time it isn't that the dogs is ignoring you it is confused. Understand that and you have 90% of the trainers figured out.
Dan!
