Prawn tail wire spinner, will it work? PIC
Just made this up, largely on ******'s design, except I made it single hook, for a prawn tail, and on a wire. In no means tried and true like some, but I'll at least try!

If all you're using for bait is the prawn tail, you won't need the wire "straightener". If you're going to use the whole prawn, I like to put the straightener below the beads.

Probably true, I was thinking more of a securing device, but I guess the hook, plus spider thread should keep it on there well enough, lucky thing I can snip that straightener right off!

Email Get Bent - He makes a great wire prawn tail spinner that is very easy to use and works great. Mine shown above, is for a whole prawn and is built on 40 pound test leader.

Overfishin Condition,
I notice the hook is rigid on your spinner. that's probably going to cause you to miss some hookups. swingin' siwash would be preferable.

if your going to use stretchy thread, you might want to consider just using a toothpick to hold your prawn on straight.

Re: Prawn tail wire spinner, will it work? PIC
******, maybe more like these...
I made them up a few nights ago, and was just bored last night so started messing with the wire spinner. The only reason I didn't put a dangling hook on is I wanted to be able to thread the prawn without worrying about the big eye at the bottom of the wire, but that's probably a good and accurate suggestion- swinging siwash that is. I've tried the toothpick before, but prefer ******'s wire jammer better. Maybe Get Bent will throw something in here!

Re: Prawn tail wire spinner, will it work? PIC
While the use of prawns and prawn tails is not uncommon up here, the employ of a spinner blade up front is alien to me. We simply use a worm needle to rig the prawn (tail facing downstream, bead and Gammy between the terminal swimmerettes).
Therefore I'm wondering:
- is the blade chiefly used in coloured water to increase visibility?
- do you use the blades in gin?
- do you perceive the blade produces more strikes than the bait alone?
Seems I'm learning something (about to anyway) already from this site!

Nog

TOC- have you had any problems with the metal clevises cutting through or rubbing the mono leader down? a friend of mine uses the same clevis, and he has had some problems with it fraying the line.

I like the plastic clevis that allows you to change blades when using mono for the prawn spinners. Good color chioces btw.

OFC. Nice!
Iron. More flash attraction and sound vibration to the lateral lines to get them to eat the prawn? Seen just a prawn score well too.

Re: Prawn tail wire spinner, will it work? PIC
BTS- Never had any trouble with the wire clevis causing line damage, but there again, I've never really fished one of the wire clevises, so... not sure. I use the plastic ones sometimes, as seen on the wire spinner, but don't like the idea of losing blades. I'm also not fond of the idea of losing fish either, so I'm searching for a happy medium. The wire seems real smooth, and there are no jagged edges, so in theory, we should be ok. If there's line damage, hopefully I'll catch it before the fish does. A compliment on my prawn spinner from ******? I'm not worthy!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Thanks for that, kinda what I thought. Might give that a try when down your side of the line again. For here, we simply dye/preserve the tails of the smaller ones (we run prawn gear most winters) with steelhead pink egg cure (turns the meat a nice purple/pink), and run them by themselves. Works especially well later in the season for some reason.
Cheers,

Re: Prawn tail wire spinner, will it work? PIC
I put one point of the treble into the top of the head, the single hook through the first part of the tail section (underside) and then push the wire down the back. This way the prawn is facing downstream, and straightened out. If you want a prawn to spin, like some people do, don't worry about the wire, or put a bed in the wire, and the prawn will spin! Tight lines and good luck, TOC.

Re: Prawn tail wire spinner, will it work? PIC
I would like to move this to the tech tip forum, but I cannot leave a copy here.
Is that OK?
Either that, or the author can move it?
Thanks,
Jen

Re: Prawn tail wire spinner, will it work? PIC
Also, try not to let the wire go much lower than the bottom of the treble hook. Either use a piece of tubingabove the single hook or cut a couple inches off the bottom of the wire. Good job though.

Yeah those were pre-finishing touches, note extended wire and non-trimmed tag ends of leader line, I guess I should state that for peope who have seen other spinners!
