Buying a new Ford truck, how to get a deal
My brother is in the process of buying a new Ford Deezle, I was going to point him to some of the website that work fleet deals, and the credit union. Also I was going to get him connected with the outfit in Lewiston, but I don't recall the name of the place, however, they move a boat load of trucks!
Any new tips on buying a rig, or the name of the big dealer in Idaho would be appreciated.
thanks in advance, gus

Re: Buying a new Ford truck, how to get a deal
Gus,
I used the local dealers internet sales sites.
I got a great deal on a new Explorer 2002. I put on every single option they offer for $32K.
Ended up with Thomason and their internet sales was a pleasure to use. They gave me a price online. No sales BS at all. How car sales should work.

You might have your Bro log onto Thedieselstop.com
and look at the 6.0 forum. It looks like the 03
motors still need a bit of R & D and Ford is letting the customer dangle while they figure out
what is wrong. I'd be more than a little irate if
I dropped $30K + and went thru what some of these
guys have.

Re: Buying a new Ford truck, how to get a deal
Gus, I'm not familiar with a huge Ford dealer in Idaho. I think what you may be thinking of is Dave Smith in Kellogg. He is primarily a Dodge dealer, and if my memory serves, the largest in the nation. Even if he's not interested in a Dodge, it might be worth a call to them just to see how they do business. It's extremely different than anything I've ever experienced before when dealing with a dealer. Very upfront and no B.S.

I would look at the Kelley blue book website (KBB) or Edmunds website just as a really good place to start before talking to anyone. From there you can know what you are doing. You may not have to leave the house. (Except to pick it up)

I've used Costco a couple of times. Both deals were $500.00 over invoice. You input what you want and the dealer coresponing to your zip code contacts you with a no haggle price. You can do it from the Costco web site. I got my invoice cost from Edmunds.com.

Re: Buying a new Ford truck, how to get a deal
Another thing to keep in mind, the dealer doesn't have to sell the rig over the invoice price to make any money. Dealers work off of incentives and holdback money. For every vehicle they sell, they make a percentage of the invoice price, which I think is somewhere between 3 and 5%. So, for a new Ford diesel, they could be $500 under invoice and still be making money. Plus, I believe there are rewards for reaching certain sales volume benchmarks where they can also make money.

Re: Buying a new Ford truck, how to get a deal
Gus, you could take the car salesman fishing in your boat, ..... but then again he may charge you more after spending the day with you, so scratch that idea.
Plenty of good info above, I used kelly blue book online and got a dealer to go $500 over invoice, (best I could find) they made the $500 deal plus the 3% give or take kickback they get from the manuf. that is plenty of profit for a dealer who did nothing but fax me back a quote that matched the kelly blue book price I could get online. I doubt they had a couple man hours in the deal and made in excess of $1500   I didnt even have to talk to a car salesman until I picked it up.
$500 over invoice seemed to be the deal when I bought mine, and not all dealers would do that, unless of course you knew somebody then there are those sweetheart deals.
Dave Smith is a dodge and chevy dealer only. He is the best deal on one of those OTHER vehicles if that is what he wants to buy. My buddy flew to Spokane, they picked him up in his truck, they drove back to the dealership and closed the deal, and he drove home for far less expense than he could get local.

Re: Buying a new Ford truck, how to get a deal
Kellogg is where I was thinking, thanks blackdog.
I got my last 3 rigs via the internet and like the process much compared to talking to salesman. I walked onto a couple ford lots and the guys comes out and says.."..yep this is the Ford I would buy, it is a great truck and you should invest in it. blah blah blah" ...so I ask what do you drive , " oh uh, a toyota" I personally can stand to talk to these guys that don't have any experience behind the wheel.
I use the credit union to get my jeep.. 500 over invoice, used an internet broker on the SD Ford, and ended up with Thomason as well. Again, no hassle they beat all prices without a bicker, 500 over invoice. The wifes van was bit more in demand and it cost 1,500 over invoice but still use the internet.
Looks like he is using the credit union which will allow doherty to bid on the business as well. My guess is Thomason will get the biz but I might be wrong. Will keep you posted.
As the internet evolves I am expecting much of the care salesman attitude to find its way into the new media. I got a little of that with the Honda Van, but it wasn't too difficult to get around. I don't mind paying for inventory, and preping the vehicle but I am not blindly laying 3K or so on the table for nothing.
Thanks!

Re: Buying a new Ford truck, how to get a deal
I agree with Tilla, the FIRST thing anyone should do when buying a new car is find out the invoice price. This is widely available from a number of sites, such as those already stated. Then you will have the upper hand in dealing with anyone.
