Default Any Powerstroke Mechs here?

Well last night while driving home from wilsonville the ol truck decided it wanted to act up. Started studdering like it wasn't getting fuel and the SES light came on? Well it wasn't a red light so I just drove it home w\o issue. So anyway this morning on the way to work the truck just shut itself off. IT fired right back up till I put it in gear then it died again soon as I put it in gear. Well to me it acts like it is the PCM which means $$$ since it is out of warrenty. Anybody have any idea? Thanks in advance Tim

Could be a fuel filter or a fuel pump. If you are not getting enough fuel it will misfire setting off a misfire code and turning on the MIL. Some OBDII systems will shut down the engine if severe emissions problems are detected. You also have a drive by wire throttle; there are 3 redundant sensors on the pedal so if one dies the other 2 can still control the fuel. When one dies it can trigger a "limp home mode", doesn't sound quite right for you but I would start with filters and if that doesn't fix it take it to a tech.

My bet is that it is not the PCM, worst case could be a injection pump. There are so many sensors that it's going to take a computer to get the codes out and start from there.

Knowing a lot of people in the construction buisness, I have been around quite a few Power Strokes. A friend of mine had a 2000 F-350 and had a problem where it would run fine then sputter and die. He would turn it over and it would fire and run for a sec and die. YOu could floor board it and it would to the same thing.

His problem was a high oil pressure sensor that failed. It was like a $1000 fix. I know of 2 trucks that have had this go wrong. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news if that is your problem....

My moms 97' had the CPS (Cam Position Sensor) go out,and it acted just like your describing. Their truck died right in the middle of a bridge in Oregon. It re-started,and died again as soon as they got across the bridge.Apparently its a common problem with the PS. If I remember correctly it was less than $200 to fix. The dealer sold them another one and showed them how to install it. They travel alot and tow a fifth wheel, and didn't want to get stuck again.

If it is a Cam Sensor, you can get them pretty reasonable off Ebay. Good luck.

I think my mom paid about $70 for the extra CPS. It was a 15 minute job when the dealer re-placed the first one.

I have a 95 pwr stk and mine did exactly what you are describing. It ended up being the cam timing sensor, then just after that fix, my fuel pump went out, which was spendy. Not soon after that, I lost the motor to electrolysis from poor anti freeze without additive. Now I have a brand new radical pwr stk. that really flys, which cost about $10,000 to fix. ATS turbo, waist gate, intercooler, 4" exhaust, 140 h.p. chip, BD torque conv. & banks trans commander. This thing will rip the axles off. Moral of the story is the pwr stk can perform and be durable if built right!

Sounds like a cps to me as well.

Do a search on the thedieselstop.com and you'll have about years worth of reading.

Good luck.

Well I did the search on the diesel stop page and everyone said it was a CPS. Now if I can just figure out where the darn thing is...

Or here.......

Somebody on the above link had a good tip about buying a new CPS from IHC rather than Ford. Apparently they're cheaper at the Cornbinder dealer, which makes sense.

How is your oil level?

The injection pump is relient on good oil pressure and if the pressure falls it will act just as though your pump is going out.

Couple quarts low is all it takes.

Glad to see you got it fixed. I've been on The Diesel-Stop for 4 years. Almost as good as ifish.

Where did you get a CPS and how much?

I wimped out on that install. I had the truck in for service and had the diesel tech do it. I wanted my pyro to be pre-turbo and the best place is to tap the manifold. I’m not equipped with the right tools for that. I have a Banks triple gage pillar pod and am happy with it. Having gages is a real eye opener. Money well spent if your going to keep it for a long time and like to tinker with it.

Thanks for info on the CPS.

Waterdog,
Yea I have been on there since I have owned my diesel so three years now. Just don't post much but they definitely helped. I got my CPS at Napa auto parts in Aloha it was a $131. Probably could of got it cheaper but I didn't really have time. Needed the truck to get to and from work. It was quite the adventure to change not a ten minute job as with a dual alternator it was a little tougher. Took bout 45 mins actually. Still not bad though. Hey you run gauges on your truck? If so you put them on yourself? I gotta do that but the drilling through the turbo pipe scares me a little.
