new guy
I've been skimming this site for awhile now and finally am going to share a story, although not very exciting.
While I was in college, a couple of buddies and I all worked our schedule of classes out so we had thursdays off. We were thinking this was going to be our fishing day. Wednesday nights we would get together have a couple of beers and tie leaders and make plans for the next day. One thursday morning found us scrapping steelhead fishing because the river was blown out. We were bound and determined to do some fishing though, I convinced them that we would go to a lake that I had been to the previous summer, not thinking that the water level of the lake would be different in the winter as it would be in the summer. So we exchange the steelhead rods for the trout rods and head that way.
We get to the lake and the water level is way down, and I'm saying to myself there is no way we can launch the boat with just a muddy lake shore for a ramp. The one buddy says no problem!! I'm having second thoughts but they're outside checking everything out and say why don't you just back down a little ways and then try to pull ahead. So I do it and pull away fine. Go a little further, pull away fine. They say "oh you got it no problem!!" So there I go,on down to the lake, launch the boat, try to pull away and nothing. Stuck bad!! Get out a shovel, try that, nothing! So here we are, stuck miles from any town, friends are in school, and who in they're right mind is going to come down to this lake in the middle of winter? One of them actually says "even if someone happens to drive by what are the chances that they have a winch or something strong enough and long enough(75-100ft) to pull you out"
So I get on the cell phone and call triple A, I'm talking to triple A trying to explain where in the world we are and they are just not understanding, and I'm getting really frustrated and frankly pretty mad at myself for listening to my "buddies", when all of a sudden a rig pulls up,the guy jumps out and says "looks like your stuck, need me to pull you out?" We say sure, you can give it a shot! I think we were all thinking to ourselves that there was no way he was getting us out of there. He had an old beat up nissan 4x4 and 100' of haywire. We hook'er up and he lets her rip and that thing was flat wound out, but he managed to pull me out.
We ended up fishing some but we were all pretty much not in the mood anymore.
Moral of the story: don't fall to peer pressure even if they are your best friends and your itching to catch some fish. Also, when things take a turn for the worse, sometimes you get lucky, really lucky!
From what I've seen, this site is unbelievable with a great bunch of people, keep it up!
Thanks for letting me share my story, hope it didn't put you to sleep.
