Foodsaver vac 800
Anyone have one of these yet? The are on sale for $130 and free shipping. Seems like a tidy system with built in roll storage and cutter.

I've got the Food Saver ultra and I don't like it.Just not enough suction. Wish I'd got the heavy duty one from Cabelas

Save your money from your piggy bank and gte a commercial sealer. Can be at least $1000, but you won't regret it. I personally think those Foodsaver's don't work worth beans. Just my $0.02

Re: Foodsaver vac 800
We have a Food Saver. I haven't a clue as to which model. The thing works. You need to make sure you place the clean, dry edges of the bag to be sealed just so, other than that it works.
Been packing away fish fillets for a couple years now. Even a year after putting it in the freezer (it got burried in the chest freezer) the fish tasted pretty fresh ~ no freezer burn.
One thing that we found that helps is to freeze liquids and really juicy stuff (like fish) before sealingthe bag. You don't want the machine to suck in the liquid into the pump. Not easy to clean that out. I learned the hard way. Check your seals in an hour or so to make sure their good and sealed. I get a leaker about one in 20. It's mostly user error so the more I use it the better the seals and I get.
Get the biggest one you can afford. And plenty of rolls to make bags. Don't go for the resealable containers. Stuff always seems to get into the seal joint and leak. Especailly coffee grounds. Too much of a hassle in the am when making coffee every day too, to drag out the sealer and reseal the grounds.
When ours eventually dies we are definately getting another one. Probably one more heavy duty depenfing on our budget at the time.
If you fish (and keep some) and/or do Costco runs, these machines are a must own!

Re: Foodsaver vac 800
I agree, mine is fine for the money I spent. sometimes you just don't get a good seal, but though experimentation you'll get decent results.
I like to lay a thick book under the bag so it's level with the sealer, seems to help. Make sure to check the seal afterwrads to make sure it's still tight. I bought mine at bi-mart and got a good deal. Buy plenty of bags, you'll go through them.

Re: Foodsaver vac 800
FYI One thing that has worked well for us with fish and other juicy things, is go to your favorite grocery store and in the produce section, ask if you can buy the partial roll of thin plastic bags. Put your fish in them, squeeze out all the air you can, then twist. place in vac bags and seal. No leakage and extra protection. works great.

Bought my cheapo Foodsaver at Costco about 4 yrs ago. Works great and no complaints. As soon as its toast, I'll buy another one.

Re: Foodsaver vac 800
I have the Foodsaver Pro II and I love it. Very rarely get a leaker. When it dies I'll get another one. Commercial ones are good but I don't have the room for one. Maybe if we ever butcher our own animals it would be okay. For fish and leftovers the Foodsaver if just fine. And ditto stocking up on the bags! Did buoy 10 one time and you couldn't buy the bags in a 50 mile radius to save your life. Look online for deals, then stock up.
