Thanks for that answer. Now I am curious...

Why do the props turn clockwise?

Is this like the reason that train tracks are the width they are?

C'mon, Kevin - it has nothing to do with the train tracks, props spin clockwise for the same reason that grass is green - I thought everyone knew that!!!

Next question is if props turn counter-clockwise on the Southern Hemisphere.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">World War II fighter planes had very powerful engines, up to 2800 hp, spinning very large propellers. The pilots had to just about stand on the rudder pedal when taking off to offset torque. That is one reason the twin engine P-38 was so good...counter-rotating engines & props...so no torque problem. The first P-38s had props that turned inwards at the top...but this was soon reversed because of turbulent airflow problems over the tail.

Default Why? Does anyone know?

This is probalby a really easy anwer for someone out there....

Why do boats, in general, steer from the right? At first I thought it was so they could pull up to the docks easier. If they were to steer from the left side, most would probalby dock on the opposite side as well.

I am sure there is a really simple answer out there.

one answer ...

"...Boat propellers turn clockwise, sez Leon, and hulls used to be designed in such a way that when there was torque on the prop, the right side of the boat would rise up. So the wheel was put on the right, so the weight of these "healthy sized" fishermen would counteract that. As long as they didn't put the beer cooler on the left, which would throw everything off. This is not a problem with modern hulls, but the design stuck. Racing boats, however usually have the wheel on the left, like American cars...."
