Dogs are being poisoned in Portland Park!!
We just returned from camping and fishing in central Oregon. Our dog Started acting run down yesterday morning. I thought perhaps the heat and everything had him tired. He didn't eat for 36 hours so I took him to the vet this morning.
Our vet here in SE Portland told me 10 dogs had been poisoned in Laurelhurst Park. All the dogs had been off leash running around in the park.
Our vet told me 3 of the dogs were patients of hers one a sheltie had died. It occurred to me the woman across the street had a sheltie. Our dog has a parasite most likely.
When I got home our neighbor was on her porch and saw me get out of the car with my dog and she asked me if I heard about the poisonings and warned me not to take my dog to any of the local parks. I told her we were just at the vets and I asked if it was her sheltie that died and she said yes. This is very sad for our neighborhood. But this person may go to other parks now that the word is out about Laurelhurst Park,
I would recommend you not let your dog off leash or let dog eat anything you don't give them. It is the law anyway in most parks. Most people chose to ignore it. I can't my dog is Akita/black lab and is too aggressive to let him off the leash when any other dog is around. Most people never seem to think that a leash law is to protect their dog as much as it is to protect people.
The vet told me all the sick and dead dogs had thrown up dog food or ground meat with a bright substance in it. Most toxic substances are clored brightly. They believe it might be paraquote.
I hope they catch this person soon.
