Windows XP question.....
Took the plunge yesterday and upgraded to XP from ME. So far, so good, except for losing the printer driver during the switch. Got it back after a couple of hours of thrashing. But no freezing or instability so far, which most of you know was a big problem with ME.
I thought I'd do a little maintenance today, but a can't find the scandisk utility. Cleanup and defrag are still there. Is this not necessary anymore? With ME, I had to run it at least weekly. What else is weird with this OS?

Re: Windows XP question.....
I run XP Home at home, and XP Pro at work. Love it, very stable....you'll find it much better than ME...that was a mess!!
I believe that "ScanDisk" is no longer an issue, Defrag has it built in?
I think you can also get shareware off the net for just this for XP, if you're so inclined.

Re: Windows XP question.....
I believe that when you run defrag it says that the volume to be defraged should be scanned prior to defrag and does it then. I use Norton Utilities to scan, defrag, and find/fix problems.

Re: Windows XP question.....
IPUMP...I updated to windows xp approx 2 yrs ago and I love it. no you cannot scan disk in windows xp, but you can "check disk" which can be run from the command line (CHKDSK) or you can do it by clicking "A drive in windows explorer and choosing "properties >tools >error-checking. yes you can defrag. by going to "Start >Accessiories >system tools > disk defrag. I have windows xp pro and im sure windows xp can do the same. hope this helps

Re: Windows XP question.....
I recently switched to XP Home and have really enjoyed it.
If you go to my computer -> right click on the drive you want to check -> click properties -> choose the tools tab -> click on error checking, it will do what I think is the "new" version of scandisk at your next startup. I always run this before I defrag and haven't even had a hickup so far.

Re: Windows XP question.....
Any OS is an upgrade from ME
Three of the easiest ways to run the scandisk util.
1~ Start, right-click My Computer, Manage, Storage, Disk Management, right-click the Volume, Properties, Tools, Check Now..., Select Options, Start.
2~Double-click My computer on the Desktop (or Start, My Computer), select drive, File, Properties, Tools, Check Now..., Select Options, Start.
3~My Computer, right-click the drive, Properties, Tools, Check Now..., Select Options, Start.

Re: Windows XP question.....
Thanx for the info.......I defragged earlier today, and it didn't tell me to run scandisk first. I also ran cleanup and blew out the old 98/ME install files. Hope this doesn't cause a problem later, but XP seemed to think they could go, so they went.
XP looks a little weird, but I thought ifish looked a little weird back when it got changed. Now I don't even notice.
It's been 24 hours and still no lockup or any other annoying problems.

Re: Windows XP question.....
Have had XP pro for a year and a half and crashes are a thing of the past. I believe you can scandisc from a boot disc. If you dont already, get at least 512 meg ram it made a huge difference for me. You can also switch the look back to the win 98 "look" if you dont like it.

Re: Windows XP question.....
1pump-
You will be amazed at the reliability of XP. I switched from 98 about 9 months ago and I have not had a single re-boot situation and I run very intensive graphics and multimedia programs.
When a program does lock up, you can go to Task Manager (I right mouse click on the Task Bar)and shut that particular program. The lock up never seems to travel up stream to the OS.
XP is a work horse...
