The best way, or the cheapest way??
Once again, Oregon education budget related things in the national news.
Cheap custodial services
Hate to keep bringing these things up...but, hey, get rid of a few more living wage jobs with retirement benefits and health care, and replace them with minimum wage jobs with little or no bennies. That'll help the big picture!!!

TR,
I cetainly agree with your stance but am wondering what you would have recommended had you been on the board making the decision?

Re: The best way, or the cheapest way??
Sadly, I'm sure I would've made the same decision.
I'm just incredibly disgusted that they are in the position to have to even make the decision to begin with.

Do you have kids?
I'm not real hot on illiterate crank-addict convicted felons hangin' out at the school.
School maintenance is just pumpin' gas to you I guess.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Hang on Stray...clarify that comment. Dont tell me that you agree with the decision that was made in light of the economic realities we're living with?!?!!? Cuz if that is what you are saying, I think I'm going to faint, due to us actually agreeing on something!

Re: The best way, or the cheapest way??
LS...yes, I have kids, one of whom is in school. No, I don't like it, but, since it's been decided by certain factions to make school funding the battle ground of ideologies, there is not enough money to go around. Do we cut $$$ for teachers, and have 40 student class sizes, or have suspect contracted maintenance workers?
I'm horrified it's gotten that far, but that's way some people, including several on this board, want it.
I firmly believe you fund certain government programs fully, REGARDLESS of the "economic realities".

Better have a seat bud, I don't want you hurting yourself when you drop! Yes, we agree. In fact, we are looking at that in our district for next go 'round if things don't change via Salem. We have already done that with busing and food service and the custodians will be considered next.
I agree with TR, it is obscene where we find ourselves and the decisions we are being forced to make but the budget we have to work with dictates that we cut where it will do the least harm to the overall education of our kids.
I wrote down a quote from the sales training seminar I attended this week. While our meetings were geared towards sales, this applies to all of life, as our presenter pointed out: "Knowledge is the supreme competitive advantage."
While off topic, I made note of another gem from our training. I found my mind wandering to Ifish when I heard our presenter quote Mark Twain with "Never trust a man who can only spell a word one way."

Oh Great, I get the opportunity to hear all your newly acquired wisdoms and saying on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Will you include any of your famous “back in my day” quotes?
By the way, I read that you are volunteering to be a 200 yard rifle target on Tuesday or did I read that wrong?

Re: The best way, or the cheapest way??
OK, I understand the message better now.
Funny how "education" is their "highest priority" during an election, but they never manage to do "Jack" about it.
A few more years, and I'm going to run. And lose, 'cause I'll be the Green Party candidate!

Re: The best way, or the cheapest way??
Yeah, and Pleasant Hill just dumped their bus drivers in favor of a contractor (probably Laidlaw or some other gang of undesirables) .
What strikes me as unfair is dozens of family wage jobs vanishing while one contractor gets rich.
I see it all the time in my line of work.
