Default Selling of smelt

This may be a stupid question but Ill ask. Is it legal to buy smelt from someone who catches it from the river? Im new and wish to purchase smelt and dont want to break any laws. I would like to catch them on the river but my work schedule does not allow any free time.

I dont wish to eat smelt just use it to feed predatory fish that I keep.

I'm afraid it would not be ok unless the person selling the smelt had a commercial license.

They are available in many grocery stores when the run is going strong.

Welcome aboard.

Crabbait's right. If money exchanges hands, it's considered a business transaction, therefore a license is needed!

By the way, welcome to the board!

Yes, it would be illegal. Same with any bait. In order to sell sand shrimp, I had to purchase both a Commercail Fishing License and a Wholesale Bait Dealers License. Commercials have to sell to Wholesalers, Wholesalers are the ones who can sell to stores, people on the river, etc...

Wise of you to check first...

I have smelt that I sealed and froze from both the Sandy and the Cowlitz. You can have as much as you want I'm cleaning out the freezer and just need to keep a few bags. Todd
