You can accuse the Democratic and moderate Republican politicians of not standing up on the issue (a no win for them) but it is the Republican right wing that makes pot an issue.
Pot laws have always been one of the key "soft on crime" strategies of the Republican right wing.
You can look at the recent "red meat" statements by the leaders of the Republican right wing regarding Canada's decision to decriminalize pot...get ready for "Freedom Bacon".
You may remember one of the leading Republican "moralists" and "Drug Czar" William Bennett...the guy with the severe gambling problem. He epitomizes the Republican right wing's political hypocrisy on the issue of pot.
