Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
The family is heading to Seal Rock. We are leaving Central Oregon and hoping to return to a forest that has not been burned down by fireworks. It has been our tradition for the last 10 years to go to watch the fireworks display at Newport. We build our annual sand kingdom and make sand candles. The boys hope to fish a little and get some fresh fish for the BBQ.

Wife and I are headed out camping somewhere probably east of the mountains. Not sure where we are going but we'll know when we get there.
Our 5th year anniversary is on the 4th so no fishing for me. On the plus side there is always fireworks on our anniversary.

Jennie,
I've been talked into taking the boat out into the Columbia for the Vancouver fireworks. I'm the designated driver. I'm afraid, very afraid.

Brion, I have always wanted to do that!
Artwo, you almost have me talked into driving to my Dad's in Canby and playing home.
Crabbait, you crack me up!!!
All the rest, it's been fun being a part of your fourth! I just love these chatty threads.

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
I've also been talked into taking my boat out to Ft Vancouver. Actually, it was either go by water or try to find a spot on land, which I know will be futile. My only real concern is finding a ramp that isn't overrun by well-oiled fair-weather dweebs. Might have to run a few miles in the dark, but that's OK. Just like duck season, only warmer.
Anybody here attempted this before? I'm assuming the boat crowd gets pretty big, but other than that I don't know what to expect once we get to the I5 bridge area. Any tips from past experience would be appreciated.

I'm fishing for a few hours in the morning.
The rest of the day will be a neighborhood BBQ and Fireworks display.
Have a great Fourth and stay safe.

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
We used to go watch the fireworks at the Washington County Fairgrounds which is close to our home but they have been cut to something like 15 minutes!!!! Not worth the traffic hassle :depressed:
After spending all week in Central Oregon I think we'll just stay at home.

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
1pump,
The retreive is the big problem. Kind of like leaving the football game and getting out of the parking lot. The guys at Sundance said to budget about 2 hours to get the boats out.
If I had to trailer the boat, I'd launch at Camas/Washougal, guessing it's far enough away to get away from the car and boat traffic on leaving.
Just a guess, someone's probably launched from there on the 4th who has better info.
The ride back is long, 10 miles, but it's with the wind.
I don't think the boat crowd is too bad. Just find a spot to anchor out of the channel and keep a Yahoo Watch.
The end of the fireworks is like that Bimini start at the sturgeon tournament. You give the drunks a 5 minute head start and steer around the wreckage.

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
I get to work. All weekend. And when the fireworks in Vancouver end, my restaurant, which is off the freeway and open 24 hours, will get very busy. Very, very busy. Luckily, I will be off before then, but it happens every year. Hours and hours of no business, then an hour of complete pandemonium, followed by hours and hours of no business until morning. Then we'll be extremely busy with travelers, then at night it will be drunk rednecks coming back from the rodeos. Yee Haw! Followed the next morning by more travelers. At the end of the weekend, just like every holiday weekend, the entire staff will be wondering why we didn't choose being a drunken bum living under a bridge as our career, instead of the restaurant industry. After a week of ibuprofen and Ben-Gay, we'll recover, and everything will be back to normal until the next holiday weekend.

Whatch doing on the 4th?
I want to hear some plans!
I live on the coast, and since many people come here for the coast... (In fact, many come clear to Kilchis Park!), I usually stay home. I figure, hey, if Kilchis Park is good enough for people to travel 2 or more hours to get to, it's good enough for me!
Besides, traffic is nasty, and I'm kind of a stay at home girl, anyhow.
But I like to hear about your plans. What food are you eating, where are you going for fireworks, and who will you be getting together with?
Entertainment, please. Tell me a story...
Jen

Yark work, staying home, barbecuing burgers for the family, force-feeding Valium to the cat before the neighborhood fireworks start. OK, maybe a little boat shopping, too.

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
Heading for Warrenton Weds evening. Fishing out of the CR for Salmon with some folks from work and an ifisher on the 3rd (Ocean willing).
Probably taking it easy on the 4th, maybe a little C&R Sturgeon with a couple ifishers. Early to bed (before the fireworks :depressed: ?) 'cause it's up and off the dock at about 4 am on Saturday with more ifishers (oh- and my bro')- TUNA!!!
Sunday some more CR Salmon with some more ifishers if we aren't all burnt out and still carking fish from Saturday (I hate it when that happens).
Almost forgot- Monday off too, Mondays for sleeping in on the dock!

Trying to keep the flying public safe while they enter and exit the war zone. Then trying to get home without being killed on the highway by some drunken "patriot" with $20 worth of booze and $500 worth of pyro!
When I get home, I get to try to convine Nick that duck season has not started and that all that shooting does not mean that there are things to be retrieved out there!

If last year is any indication of what will happen this year, then I'll not say what I'll be doing this year. I will say, however, that being a Teletubby is not a good thing to be around me on July 4th.
In case Ampersat reads this: ask Butch what happens to bad Tubbies that hang around with the wrong people.

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
Jen,
You'll enjoy this one since you were once a home town girl yourself.
Our day starts at 5am with me going down and taping off our spot for the Canby Days parade. Then it's back home for a little quite morning time. Next it's time to rost the rest of the clan up so we can head down to the pancake feed at about 9am. The pancake feed is always a fun time with good food and lots of socializing. After breakfast it's off to take in all of the street vendor booths at the city park and more socializing. Around noon we'll get lunch from one of the street vendors (I love the teriaky chicken and pan fried noodles) with an elephant ear and a fresh squeezed lemonade. Then it's off to our parade spot to get all setup for the parade at 2pm. Our parade is your typical small town parade with mostly local poeple/businesses/municaplaities making up the group. There's always lots (I mean LOTS) of candy being thrown for the kids. It's a very patriodic event with lots of military/police/fire folks. After the parade it's back to our house for the annual block party, which we are hosting at our house this year. Lots of friends, neighbors, eats, drinks and games to make up the evening. Once it gets dark, well that's when the real fun starts. We do tons of fireworks with the kids and even a few for the adults (neighbors brother works for a fireworks whosaler in Montana so we get some good ones). The city fireworks display is at the grade school less than a 1/4 mile from our house so we can take them in as well. Usually around midnight things wind down and things are put away for the night. Then comes the next morning, lots of stuff to clean up and put away, but the neighbors all help.
IT'S A BLAST.................
If there is anyone looking for something to do on the 4th, come to Canby if you enjoy the small town kind of affair. The city does a real fine job putting allot of effort it the day, it's allot of fun.

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
i'll be staying home trying to keep my dogs from freaking out when the neighbors start firing off their illegal fireworks. i might get some trout fishing in earlier in the day though. i should work on my drifter some but i need a fishing fix first.
tfg: i'll check on that teletubby action when i get to work. if it's good, i might "out" your story.

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
You folks who are going to the Couv fireworks by water (or land) be careful. There's a bunch of drunks and go fast's out there that think they can go 50 mph in the dark cause they're too drunk to see anyway even if they went slow. I guess they need to get home before they pass out.
I haven't been to that one (hit the downtown one several times and spent the night though), but I have a bud who hasn't missed it in like 15 years. He waits till 1 or so after all the idiots are gone bafore he will pull out and head home.
Don't assume ANYONE knows the rules of the road or what those little green and red lights mean. Drive slow and defensively (you need to watch for logs anyway). Be carefull, and have a designated driver (and then you can have the designated drunks of course).
OH ya- WEAR YOUR PFD's cause if you do get hit you'll want them on before it happens!

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
I am going to work. I will let the holiday crowd fill up the rivers and woods while I slave away.
When it is all over and there is a traffic jam heading West on 26 from Government Camp to Welches I will be in the opposing lane at a good pace laughing heartily towing the drift boat to an undisclosed location where the crowds have just left.

Going camping at Almeda, below Galice (and much of the activity) on the Rogue for some badly needed R and R!!
Will see many more people than if I stayed at home but no phone, no computer, vs fishing rafting, swimming, , and hanging with my wife, daughters and new dog, Boomer. My oldest (not dog!) works at Galice and we will likely have a meal or two there.....

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
AAAHHHHH... The fourth of July, my favorite holiday of the year!
We've been watering and weeding and cleaning and planting and arranging things in the yard house and deck now for the last two or so weeks in preperation for the anual party. This party has become a tradition for me and the wife for the last ten or more years now.
The party this year will have fewer people, we're figuring about 24 and maybe a few dropins. In past years we've had up to 45 people.
I do it pot-luck, everyone brings a side dish and their beverage of choice and I supply enough skinless teryaki BBQed chicken thighs to stuff everybody.
After the feeding frenzy, as it starts to get dark all the chairs are brought to the front yard and we proceed to light up the night sky, always keeping hose and fire extinguisger handy of course.
We usually shut things down around 11:30 or 12:00 out of respect for our neighbors (the few that were not out watching us light up the sky anyway). Now comes the quiet part where the people that chose to drink a bunch set up their tents in the back yard, that's a fun one to watch!
Come morning we get two coffee pots going for the adults that stayed over and some juice milk and cereal for the kids. Those kids are great to have around the morning after 'cause they get to clean up the HUGE mess left in the road and get paid for it with all the empty cans and bottles from the day before.
It's A Goodin'

So guess which of our sisters we celebrate the fourth with ...

Working twelve hour graveyard shifts making milk carton stock for all your kids to drink milk out of when they are in school. If they didn't pay us such an outrageous amount of money on these holidays, I might not want to do it much longer.

Had great expectations for a long holiday weekend fishing with friends but guess that'll have to be another time. :depressed:

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
Grammy and Papa took our boys (and their mothers too) to Canby for the show. Not the Couv, but a good family venue. Here they are (Grammy is still working on the night shots with the digital) with their glo-stick crowns (It's a family thing).

Re: Whatch doing on the 4th?
Just got back from our misadventure on the CR at Ft Vancouver. Actually went much better than anticipated. Only two other boats at the ramp. All was well until we almost arse-ended some gorn on the MC. He was going about 5 mph in the pitch dark with no stern light. Missed him by less than 10 feet.
The cops outnumbered the boats where we anchored to watch the show. Everybody behaved themselves, and a good time was had by all.
