Default Broad Daylight... Fearless coyotes!

Dead of day a coyote comes out in the front yard, nose up to the sky and starts howling! Gets my dog in a dander, and out the door he goes. Fearless Kilchis idiot! There is a whole pack out there, and he's barking with them! They will make easy work out of him in no time! So, I go out and scream for Kilchis. Thank God he's obedient! This lesson could have saved his life!

Anyway, they are having a hey day out there howling it up right next to our tent! Dogs and cats are in the house, thank GOD.

I wish I knew how to shoot Bill's gun, because for the first time in my life, I wanted to kill things with four legs!!!

Jen

Coyote update: About 40 just ran through the yard!!! The coyote above was the biggest sucker I've ever seen! Get the gun, Margarette!
WHY DO I HAVE BILL LOCK UP THE DANG GUNS?
Oh! I know! Cuz I don't know how to use them?

How about posting a help wanted add on the Ifish Hunting page. I bet you could get a few hunters to come down and thin the pack.

The other thing you can try are some noisey fire works.

Some people have "street" sense. Well, My dog has "woods" sense. If she hears, smells or sees coyotes, she comes running to the house.

My hubby swears she is trying to communicate "shoot them varmints" when she sits on the porch staring at us and wondering what we plan to do about them.

Having a male human mark the territory seems to help.

I used to hunt birds on a ranch in Lake County and the rancher always had a rifle in his rifle rack and always encouraged us to shoot coyotes if we saw any. The place was thick with jack rabbits and ground squirrels...eating away at his alfalfa...but the guy wanted the coyotes killed anyhow...

I grew up in sheep/goat country in Texas and the only thing that got put down faster than a rattlesnake was a 'yote.

Let's see. Coyote's have no natural predators except man (ok, and some raptors when they are very young).

That means that Mother Nature will control their number through starvation or disease as soon as their prey base is expended. What do Coyote's prey on? Mice, rats, moles, voles, shrews, gophers, squirrels, oppossums, birds including grouse, pheasants, quail, ducks, turkeys, and young geese and chickens, cats, kittens, small dogs and puppies, young deer and elk, sheep and fish when they can get them plus anything left out or accessible by any means.

Or, we can shoot some of them before they clean out the larder!

Coyotes averaged 3 or four a night when we were standing watch. A couple nights we couldn't stand watch. They got 37 lambs one of those nights. They don't kill a lamb and eat the whole thing. They'll kill one and eat just the belly meat. Or open its neck and just drink the blood. Sometimes they just kill.

It doesn't help that sheep are the absolute dumbest animals on the planet. You'd think they run away or make some noise while their buddy right beside them is getting his throat torn out, but no, they either are sleeping or chewing cud.

They also got a few chickens, one of the hired hands dogs was tore up pretty good and they got three calves. We had more than plenty prairie dogs, rabbits, mice, birds, fish for them to eat, but a sitting duck, I mean sheep, is easier to get.

Hey Geek what do you mean have a human male mark the territory. We all know that it is the female human that strikes terror in all species including man.

Jen if you want them thinned out some put up a post and some of us when the season is open can come over and do some calling. I do however think that it would be a slim chance of them getting kilches he is just protecting his turf. Give him a big hug and a pat on the head for wanting to protect his loved ones. Now if you have a cat that is a diffrent story they will when possible get those. See guys sometimes yotes are good. (Cat thing you know)

Geek,

As Wannacatchem posted, they are considered public enemy. At one point in the 70's there was a 250.00 bounty on 'yotes. I suppose these folks are just trying to make a living.

The simple solution is just put up a NO COYOTE TRESPASSING SIGN. or just have Bill go out every night and mark his territory.

Jennie:

Very good chance that the behavior that you are seeing is a learned behavior. That pack sounds like it is specializing on dogs. The one running through your yard is trolling. If your dogs give chase, chances are it will meet the pack in the bushes and not come home. Not an unusual behavior in the interface areas. Are your neighbors loosing cats and dogs? 'Yotes are NOT dumb, they are very successful preditors quite capable of learning new tricks, and trolling is not new. They will keep it up until the prey base (ie: your dogs/cats/birds) is gone, then they will move on.

I'd contact your animal control, animal damage control, or learn to use a .22 (if legal) and take a few out. That should move the remaining pack out of the area. Coyotes are not in any way, shape or form "endangered", you won't hurt the population by killing a few. Good luck.

Oh, if you get help, have them use a "kitty call".

Don't count on the state helping with coyote problems...no money. As for being cute fuzzy animals...you're entitled to your opinion.
Bottom line is that 40 coyotes ( or even more than 1 or 2, when they show no fear, is a hazard to pets, kids, people. Don't think for a minute that a lab sized dog can hold its own against a coyote. Best you can hope for is a ripped up dog and a big vet bill. Usually the results are more terminal. Never seen a dog win that one, but I've seen the results. Thin out even 2 or 3 and the circle of life thing will register in the yotes minds and they won't be so brave. Too far for me to drive, but someone must be able to introduce a yote or two to a 50 grain Ballistic Tip.

Jennie, the coyotes tend to be very active now with new pups to feed, plus some pups are now larger and are coming out of the dens. Also, there seems to be some 'separation' going on with the yearlings. Maybe, they're being kicked out by the adults who are encouraging them to find their own territory. This keeps the adults busy. Two weekends ago we saw them throughout the day, from morning until night. The activity has slowed this week.

Our two dogs, about 90# each, interact with the coyotes almost daily. Lots of opportunity for serious biting from both sides but in two years, no bloods been drawn. Its mostly a mix of territorial behavior with a little play, occassionally.

The two adults did get pretty tense when their newly emerged pups came out and our dogs were around.

Last year the resident ODFW told me that in over 20 years he knew of know instance where coyotes killed a healthy deer here. Rodents are the mainstay of their diet. I seriously doubt if they were 'trolling' to kill you dog. In a desperate winter, maybe, but now food is abundant.

When you live here, coyotes are part of the system just like the salmon and bears.

Take heart, at least these creatures aren't the one's that line your road and all the surrounding ones up the way with beer cans and litter. I'll always prefer coyotes to pigs.

Gary, I'd like to believe you.
I'd like to like them.
I could really enjoy them, if they weren't a threat to my dogs, chickens, and cats.
It's neat to hear about your dogs and the coyotes.
I don't enjoy killing anything, I'm the "bring a coyote pup home to Mom" kind of person.
I'd like to do a little research on them, and see if they kill dogs, or if it's all hype.
Want some facts!
I am writing short sentences. I need coffee.

Jennie,

My neighbor has lost two dogs to coyotes over the last five years. It wasn't over food, but territory.

Shooting "yotes" would be a last resort for me. Perhaps a paint ball gun would be a good idea?

I was serious about marking territory. I would suggest having your boys do it instead of Bill, as they would have more young male "hormones" associated with the scent. (no offense Bill  )

Every situation is different. They are definitely a threat to cats. Our generic cat is definitely inside at dusk. One benefit though is coyotes eliminate feral cats, which themselves are very hard on wildlife.

In coyote country, you have to take necessary precautions. You wouldn't let your dog loose in traffic and similarly, you wouldn't want to leave a smaller dog alone with a pack of coyotes - it's possible they'd kill it out of territoriality rather than food.

Can you say..........T R I G G E R H A P P Y?? Well I think that if you have 40 yotes running around 1). Mark your teritory. 2). Load the .22, 30.06, 357, 270, 45, 44 and you'll be set. 3). Load all weapons. 4). walk outside 5). Empty all guns as quick as possable. Ya know Jennie I belive they used to pay you for every coat you brought them.....

Peace out, John

I don't tell many people this, but we had sheep when I was growing up. Where I grew up, if you had sheep, you eventually had dog trouble from neighbors.

The best solution? A load of #4s from a shotgun. If the 'yote is further than probably 30-40 yards you're not likely to kill it but you WILL get his attention and send him home with a few pellets in his hide. If you prefer you can shoot for it's rear end and truly minimize the odds of lethality but definitely make your point.

Are ya' leavin' out revenuers? Or is that just down in the smokies?

I have heard of people putting strategicly placed piles of scat from the largest dog they can find. The 'yotes don't want to mess with the big dog and give it a wide bearth.

To keep our groupings on moving targets tight for when hunting season opens back up.

GaryK,

My buddy lost two 70lb plus male labs to coyote trolling this time last year. This was right along the Umatilla River near Echo. In addition to quail chicks, ducklings, and various rodents, there are GOJILLIONS of feral cats running around )he shoots two or three cats a week).

My brother-in-law owns a ranch in Lakeview. They see trolling all the time. He shot a female and a male over his male collie's back in February of this year.

Maybe it's different over here in Eastern Oregon, but the female in estrus trick is one of the oldest in the book for an ambitious pack.

Jennie, you should eliminate these varmints with extreme prejudice!

Corey

Well, if it were just the cats at risk, I'd be on the coyotes' side. But if the silky though slightly stoopid one is in danger again (remember the buck), I am for shooting the yotes. Kilchis is too cute to lose.

It amazes me how some people can sit here and say "Why do you have to kill them? Let nature take care of it." Yet they want the seals thinned out. The coyotes/cougars are not in danger. The salmon are a lot more in danger than any Oregon predator. Think about that next time you grad your fishing poles and go catch fish. I am not saying that it is wrong to fish. I do it a lot. I am just saying don't be a hypocrite.

Nature is sadly no longer in charge, we are. There are no grizzleys and no wolves. The yotes only competition is cougars. We need to keep them in check, just like cougars.

Now grab your rifle and shoot a few, they will make more. Then go grad your pole and go catch dinner.

Killing is not the answer!

Think of all the innocent creatures that will be maimed or killed if you go in with your arsenal of advanced weapons!

No, you must reason with them. You must sit down with them and discuss how it makes you feel when they eat one of your cats. Explain that killing is not the answer and surely they will go away.

No, to kill them would be to get down to their inhumane level. You must show them that peace is the way to victory. Sit out in the meadow and protest silently.

Ya, right!
