Default Hatchery tag question????

I am having a hard time writing on my tag. It looks so crappy. If you were to look at it, you would not be able to read it. What good is it if you can't read it? Is it better to write on it at the river and not be able to read it or write in the info at home when you are dry and able to write so some one can read it? I don't want to get busted if the officer can't read it and I don't want to get busted if I haven't written any thing on it...............

I was having the same trouble, until I got a hold of a fine-point sharpie. I have even used this in the rain with no runs or smears -- they work great.

Keep your tag in ziplock plastic baggie and a pen in another bag (don't want ink explosions) and your tag will stay dry and your pens will be write-able.
If I were you, I would attempt to fix the hieroglyphics you have on there now if it is legal. I would give ODFW a call and ask them about it....you don't want to have a call or a visit from a game officer come next year!

You can't write on a wet tag with a ballpoint pen. It just doesn't work. If you can manage to keep your tag dry, the next step is to make sure that your pen actually writes. I carry at least two different pens and I scribble on the location/species codes slip to make sure it writes properly. Then, if I can get my hands to stop shaking I write down my catch.

I'll have to see about the fine point sharpie. Will it write properly on a wet tag?

I use a "write in the rain" pen. We use them for work.
You can pick them up at a survey supply store.
(there is one located on Nimbus off of Hall in Beaverton)The sharpie I think would smear in wet conditions?

Not so sure about "updating" your hieroglyphics either. Many years back I had my first 10-12 entries written with an old felt tip pen and one day I got the tag wet and when I took it out to record my next fish the whole dang bunch of first entries were barely, If at all legible. I took it home and went back over them carefully with a permanent.
Next trip down I got checked and the officer said I had an "altered tag" and COULD write me up for it.
Fortunately I did not get a ticket.
The ultra fine point sharpie is great.

On the "Harvest Card (Tag) Location Codes" paper they give you with your tag, on the back above the examples they give you it says in bold letters: Entries must be recorded in ballpoint pen.
I suppose it has more to do with your interaction with the game officer than with the actual pen of choice.
I used to use the ultra fine sharpies but now stick with the way they write it, ball point pens.

Try telling Mr. Fish&Game that you did not make entries for these fine fish because you felt that you could do a much better job when you get home. I don't think they would be very understanding.

Y.D.: DONT!!! try to clean-up your tag! we had to use a pencil 1 time, asked the odfw officer at the check in he said "never" try to "update" your tag it looks even worse to them.do the best with what you have, ever since I keep several good pens on board and in the vest etc.

use a "space pen", you can purchase them at a local office supply store. You can write in the rain, upside down, freezeing etc....they work great.
