Keni style
Backbouncing or back trolling a large spin n glow, sometimes with one wing clipped with eggs is a popular method and can produce great results on the Keni. But I have never tried on any Oregon rivers this way, other than drift fishing smaller spin glows.
Anyone ever try this on the Clack or other rivers for springers? They getm on the Columbia from the bank.

Re: Keni style
I have seen this used extensively on the Clack and Sandy. Usually the spin glow is accompanied by eggs and or sand shrimp. I haven't heard of clipping off a fin before though. Am I missing something? I think this is a pretty common method.

Re: Keni style
Clipping one fin off causes an erratic movement, sort of a crippled effect to the spin glow.
Simmilar to picking the ones that have the hole drilled a little off center.
Haven't tried it yet though, just what I have heard done up North sometimes can produce when it is slow.?

Re: Keni style
I believe Beau-Mac makes a one-winged Cheater called a Wiggle-Spinz (either that or it's a Worden's product that's akin to a one-winged Spin-N-Glo). B-run is right... it helps to create more action... like a tire/wheel that hasn't been balanced.

Re: Keni style
It's done a lot on our rivers, just the size is toned down from the Alaska set-up.
The wing can be clipped or a hole punch can be put into the wing too. Also the wings can be painted black with a felt tip pen.

Re: Keni style
I frequently use spin-n-glows while backbouncing or backtrolling just about anywhere, but I've never thought to cut off one of the wings. Thanks for the idea, I love trying new things!
Just remember that you don't always need a large spin-n-glow, just match the size to the type and clarity of water you're fishing. Even on the Willamette, I'll often use a fairly small one when I'm using it above bait.

Re: Keni style
Dave, why tone down the size? We didn't use massic ones up there, just maybe one size larger than here... But we use massive k-fish here, just like there, and we caught a couple 5-10 pound trout there on that same huge bait, spinglo, 5/0 hook combo? You're the guide, fill me in!

Re: Keni style
Hey Dave, when coloring the wings, why stop at black?

Re: Keni style
Why stop at black? No need to, we used to add mylar tape, now they come with it.
I normaly use smaller spin-glos here becuase to get better hooksets a smaller rig will fit better into the mouth of our smaller size fish.
Up north one of the reasons I use a big spin-glo and large hook (7/0 or 8/0) is to keep the fish from swallowing it so that they can be released easier.

Re: Keni style
Dave, when I mentioned stopping at black, what I was really getting at was trying all sorts of different color wings. I've painted the wings several different colors. Has it improved the catching for me? Hard to say, but it hasn't seemed to hurt. Maybe I get bored, maybe I'm nuts, but I'm always up for trying something different than what the guy next to me is using.

Re: Keni style
We fish a spin-n-glo behinda diver with bait (eggs or sand shrimp) on the Clearwater, for both Steelies and Springers. I like bigger ones for Springers, and a nice glob of eggs.

Re: Keni style
That's what I meant, no need to stop at black, other colors can be tried.
And you're right, it doesn't hurt but most the time it might not matter, as long as there's some quality bait and the fish are around.
