Default boats on Davis Lake?

Anyone ever take a larger boat, say like an 18' sled on Davis?
Going over there in August and not really into the float tube thing.
Thanks

Lake level drops throughout the summer. By July, it is hard to get a trailer boat in and out of the lake. Better suited to pontoons or kayaks.

I suggest you might look into checking out watershedboats they make a 10 ft. pram for all that type of fishing. Prams are great for throwing in the back of a truck and they float in a mud puddle - they don't cost a fortune and will come in handy when your sled is to big. - just a thought.

Might be worth a call to Fred at The Hook fly shop in Sunriver. He seems like a good guy and knows a lot about Davis Lake and fishes out of his big boat on it.

Even with the healthy snowpack this last winter, the water at Davis is still pretty low, at least compared to the good years of the past.

We tried last year with an 18 foot sled; we tried the 3 ramps we could find, but no luck. We ended up going over to Crane. I would not try it again with anything bigger than a drift boat. We saw plenty of smaller boats out there.

That is a very false statement. We have had bass outings out there with nearly 100 guys, most in power boats right along side the ODFW with their power boats. Take a look again.

From the current Oregon Boater's Handbook:

Davis Lake, Deschutes/Klamath, 830.185
10 mph speed limit for motorboats during legal fishing days and hours.

The thing is, it's so hard to get bigger boats in that you don't often hear or see them (and the regulars like it that way). I've never seen a big sled there that I can remember. I usually toon it.

Would it be possible to get a 17 foot bass boat in there?

I used to put my 16ft bass boat in it all the time when i had it. Problem is that by july the water level has dropped enough that there is no gradient at any of the launches...you can't get backed up far enough to get the boat off the trailer......
Another option that i have used is launching at the little launch in odell creek. its a fairly steep launch, water depth there is not a problem...the trick is being able to motor down...and especially motor back up the creek to the launch, its full of stumps and some very shallow spots.....
Most of the guides only run the sleds until june/july then use drift boats with motors after that....or they have jacked up rigs with big tires to be able to back waaayyyy out there....

The other problem is the mud. It goes forever. I talked with a forest service officer there a couple of years ago and he told me a story about a couple of young men who drowned after being stuck in the mud. They were in the middle of the lake and got stuck. The water can be very shallow at any place on the lake.
