Default open seat n. santiam

I am looking to get over the hill tomorrow. I have a 16' alumiweld guide model. Need someone familiar with the river, as I am not. Also fairly new to drifting. The boat has 2 bow seats and 1 pedastal seat in back, along with rowers seat. I will be taking my 14 yr son and his friend, so the boat will be full. I am leaving soon and will be back in a few hrs. to check. feel free to email me also. Mike.

You might drop Bill Sanderson (Billsan) a line. He can give you some great info on the Santiam. Be careful on that river. It sank six driftboats last winter.

If you're new to drifting, I would recommend wearing life jackets and staying below Green's Bridge. That section is easier to navigate than the upper drifts.

That river eats *LOTS* of boats. I lost count of the number of boats that sank there last year. Bill Sanderson is an expert on the N. Santiam. He can give you advice or take you on a guided trip and show you how to run the rapids.

March 6th "Learn the River" on the North Santiam will be provided by Bill Sanderson and other local guides. The "Learn the River" is a free deal that Bill S. provides to the public for people like you, that aren't knowledgable with this river. Not that many trees stumps in this section, just the upper section above Jefferson to Stayton is where allot of boats have been eaten. Allot of channels in that section. But your adventure will float through flat water at a mild high flow from Green's Bridge to Buena Vista (Willamette R.). Good catches of winter steelhead have been happening at Green's Bridge. We're meeting at the Plantation Inn in downtown Jefferson at 7:30-8am to schedule a car-pool and the launch time is set for 9am. this is a spinner, drift with some plug pulling. Plan on fishing with the flow so you don't get left behind. We stop for a shore side lunch in the middle of the day. Warning, the river above Mehama Bridge to Fishermen's Bend is class 2 to 2+ for new people and above Fishermen's to Packsaddle is class 2 to 3. these section have some technical route where good rowing skill are required!!! great fishing in these areas if you can make it down in one piece.HEHEHEH.

Chinookin- Please be aware that the drift from Greens bridge to Jefferson Although considered easy by many drifters standards including my own has taken many a boat and many lives.
Just a word of caution for those who don't have alot of time on the Santiam or the oars.
Good luck and be safe.

To all that have responded. I am just floored by the concern for safety of a novice. I have been researching and chatting, and have found a few (hopefully) new friends. I am aware of the learn the river trip and plan on taking it. This isn't my first time on the oars and have drifted the deschutes at mecca flats and below shearers. I know I am new, and until I learn my limits, all trips will be on the conservative side. Life jackets are a must on my boat, and listening to the capt. as well. (for the kids.) I have plenty of "marine time" and know how water effects boats. As mrbrowntrout can attest, we grew up together. and by the way, if you can make it here from boise, your ALWAYS welcome to come along, I owe you a few trips i think. Again, thanks for all of your concern.....I love this sight. Thanks Jennie. Thank you for all those that responded. Mike.
I'll post a report tomorrow evening.

Ya Mike a friend down in Astoria caught a nice springer on Friday. Too bad you could not make it over the last couple days of March, I am planning on being there for a couple days. Heck maybe I will drop off an extra springer by your parents house????
Anyway good luck and take lots of pics and email them to me.

Was floored a good thing or bad? There are some kinky spots in that river, I've heard folks say if you can drift it you can drift any river. I dont no never tried. But before I would try it I would have Mr. Sanders take me down it and gladly pay for the knowledge. And by the way shhh . there are fish there. Good Luck Its A great river.
