Default Trout stocking

Looks like alot of lakes will be getting stocked on 3-01-04. Get the ultra-lite poles ready, and the kids bundled up.

My 5'6" Shakespeare ultra light combo hasn't seen a fish yet. Bought it after I stopped fishing for trout last year! Gonna break her in this year though!!! I guess i'll have to reluctantly bust out the pontoon boat too, huh

Anyone with experience or knowledge please post..Im ready to play some trout and may jump on the action march 1st day of stocking.

They'll bite although they will taste better after spending some time eating natural foods.

Where can a person go to find when the lakes will be re-stocked? I hope they re-stock some lakes here locally.

"Anybody ever fish the same day as the stocking takes place??"

I'm not sure about this, as I'm new to area, but I went out to fish Battle Ground Lake (half a mile from my house) a day or two after they had supposedly dumped big hatchery trout in. I was on the dock, and there were big trout swimming right around the boat ramp. I cast worms, power bait, worms and powerbait, spinners, etc. on them, past them and everything short of jumping in and grabbing them and they were not interested. Someone came by later and said they were still too shocked by the new environment to eat.

Don't know if this relates to your question, but there it is.

You can find Oregon stockings at the link above. You could probably find WA stockings on their fish and wildlife website.

I would second David Johnson, they bite but don't taste as good.

>>>Wonder if the fish need time to settle in..before they start biting and catching.<<

Years ago I saw them dump the fish in at Doorman and the bite was on within minutes.
I might do the trout pond thing once a year for kicks and giggles but I let the fish go. I don't care how long they've been in there I still think they taste nasty and all them lil' bones, no way. Paid my dues on that as a kid.
Now, a stringer full of high mountain crick dwelling brookies. Yum, I'll even swaller their bones.

Last year while fishing at Kline line in vancouver, we saw the truck pulling in to stock the lake. they dumped the fish in 15 yards from us. they told us to wait for 10 minutes before we could fish. we waited our 10 minutes then started fishing. Every cast was a fish on. We switched lures to see what they would not hit. they hit every thing. I'll bet I could have thrown the kitchen sink and cought a fish.

I've been at Detroit twice as the stocking truck was dumping fish. They hit immediately on anything we threw at them both times.

Normally I just catch and release trout for fun, but when trout fishing for dinner I toss back the freshly planted fish (or "cream of wheats" as we call them) They are usually soft and pale. The hold over fish look better and taste better

Newly released trout will bite immediately upon hitting the water and they will bite on anything. I've even seen people catch them on plain hooks! ODFW doesn't feed the trout for 2-3 days before they transport to the lakes to stock. The mortality rate is lower when their stomachs are empty. I know this because I work for the dept. and have the wonderful priviledge of working at Foster Lake from Spring to Fall. I've had people limit out on trout within 5 minutes of fishing.

They taste better and the meat is more pink the longer they are in the water though!

Can't wait untill they stock. It is a lot of fun to see who can catch the most fish. I don't like the way the stocked ones taste but you can sure catch alot.
