Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
I "tear up" every time I watch that movie. The scene near the end where Costner plays catch with his dad get's me everytime.....wish I could do that :depressed:

Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
Not easy to only pick one. I love Field of Dreams and also Bull Durham. Eight men out is great also. Another one that is fun to watch is " Long Gone" about an old time minor league team. The rookie was entertaining because it is a true story like eight men out was. Might just have to go rent a couple old basball movies tonight.

Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
Toss-up, field and natural are favs. Rookie wasnt bad was it? (for a rated G flic)
"The babe" wasnt on the list!..I thought it was a good movie...John Goodman as Babe Ruth? couldnt think of anyone else who would have done it better.
When are they going to make a movie about Bill Buckner?
(I bet my TV and a flat of Bud on that series! )

Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
Yeah "Long Gone" was a pretty good movie. The guy who does the "CSI" TV shows starred in it didn't he?
There were a bunch of sequels to the Bad News Bears and Major League movies but I didn't feel any were worth mentioning.

Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
Yeah Stew ,William Peterson the CSI lead is the player/Manager in long gone and. Good baseball movie about the Minor leagues back in the 40's and 50's I believe.
I really like you qute from Norman MacLean, he has wrote some great books as did his father. Both wrote books on Catastrophic Forest fires. Norman on the Storm King Mt. fire and His Dad on the Mann Gulch Fire. Both fires were earily Similar.

Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
I was tempted to vote for "A League Of Their Own" because it was freakin' funny. But "The Natural" was just too good.
Wasn't "The Rookie" written by Mike Rich, of KINK radio?

Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
I was glad to see someone selected "Pride of the Yankees" starring Gary Cooper. It's probably my second favorite baseball movie next to "Field of Dreams". Cooper's portrayal of the immortal Lou Gehrig was unforgettable and it featured the real Babe Ruth.
Someone mentioned John Goodman's portrayal of Babe Ruth....he actually had to lose weight for that role

Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
........."Welcome back to Yankee Stadium ladies and gentlemen, I'm Bob Costas and with me as usual, is Bob Eucre as we head to the bottom of the ninth in a scoreless game with one out, and a runner on first for the yankees"
"Reggie Jackson steps into the batters box, and here comes the first pitch, Reggie shows bunt and watches a high fastba....Whats this? Billy Martin has taken the field, hes running straight towards home plate waving his arms and appears furious. Is he going to argue a strike called?"
"Bob I think we are about to witness history here, Billy is yelling at Reggie! lets see if we can get a microphone down there" "Apparently Manager Billy Martin is upset with Reggie for attempting to bunt" Yes Bob, Ive never seen anything like it!" "Well Bob, I cant think of a more inapropriate time or place to critisize a team-mates play choice" "your right Bob, the chewing tobacco is really flying now, it appears the umpires have decided to stand back and watch but have not approached the two spatting Yankees in an effort to curtail this most unuasual session of dirt-kicking confrontations...I sure hope Reggie puts the bat down" "Very true Bob, Maybe Billy should throw away the broken bottle of Thunderbird too"
"Lets go to commercial shall we Bob?"
"good idea Bob, we dont want the kids to see this"
>Fade to a field of flowers<
"I'd like to buy the world a coke, and keep it companeeee..........."

Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
I loved the rookie, it had all the elements of a good basball movie. The natural would be second.

Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
You can't beat Major League for a good portrayal of career baseball players. Probably not a great flick for kids, though.

Re: Favorite Baseball Movie
What! Bad New Bears. I might be biased because they so closely resembled my little league team. We even called our coach, my Dad, Buttermaker. We had no money, crappy uniforms, a crappy field, broken equipment, and bad attitudes. My Dad would haul all of us around in the back of his old truck, back when it was safe for ten kids to ride in the back of a truck while the driver whittled away at a six-pack of Bud. We won a lot of baseball games and fist-fights. I tear up just thinking about... the time I took a line drive right in the "boys".
