Default First fish on my fly rod

WOOOO I caught my first fish on my fly rod after 3 trips out getting skunked!

The fish itself was nothing to brag about, I was fishing a back water area from the bank of the willamette. There were so many fish surfacing that I decided to grab my fly rod from my truck.

After about 15 casts with a PED and 10 strikes with no hook up, I finally caught one! I didn't know what they were before I caught it, but I knew they were fingerlings or smolts of some species. I didn't expect it to be a little Shad though. It was about 4 inches long and fought really hard for such a little fish. I let him tucker out(or so I thought) before I brought him out of the water to remove the fly and he was just flippin around like no other. That little guy had some stamina! I got the fly out very easily and off he went.

I had a few more strikes but no more hook ups. I'm so happy that I can actually say I caught a fish on my fly rod...now I can finally catch something a little bigger! We'll find out this weekend!

YAY!

Way to go! You'll be hooked in no time.

My first fish on a fly was a 4 inch bluegill caught with a black gnat.

Congratulations... and always keep everything you need in the truck.

My story...
...broke my wife's fly rod, so gave her my old one
...bought new 9 ft 6 wt, line, leader and tippet
...grandson baptized it in upper Clackamas, caught "lots of C&R trout"
...I took the rod out yesterday for my first try but left the reel at home
...family heckled me all the back to PDX

Oh well, just a good excuse to go again.
I will catch fish with it, eventually.

That small shad might only be hooked for less than a minute, but you're hooked for a lifetime... Congrats!

If you want to hook a bigger fish.....it shouldnt be too much of a chore to put on a big stone fly, or a Hopper pattern and fling that thing around the Willamette. The chance of hooking into a decent sized bass would be pretty good in a lot of different places. Try using a small popper type of fly. That will get some hair raising strikes.
