Default Pollen

Well, I'm back from the coast and the mountains...anywhere to get out of the upper Willamette valley in late May to mid-June when the grass pollen lets loose. There are about 425,000 acres of commercial grass seed fields in this end of the valley and they all pollenate at once and north or northeast winds blow it all here. A "very high" pollen count rating is 200 pollen grains per cubic meter...here in Lane County the count routinely runs 450-500 and spikes to over 1,100 have been recorded...the highest in the world. Unless treated, the result for me, and thousands of others, is 4 weeks of misery...allergic reactions...feeling crappy...irritable... Like many, I spend a considerable amount on pills, but they don't provide total relief...sometimes it seems like they must be placebos...

Pollen levels are beginning to taper off and days like today are welcome.

Anyone else suffer from pollen allergies?

Yup, I know how you feel. I love to see the pollen blow off the fields like thick dust on hot days. NOT! That hot spell we had will make it end a couple of week early too. Word is around Mac is the grass will be all cut before the 4th of July! Usually it's mid July.

Allegra and flonase has helped me a bunch. No more OD'ing on OTC antihestimes but your right, I still feel horrible. The only good that comes of this is that I'm only allgeric to the grass pollen. 11 months of the year I have no other problems.

I've been in a comatose state for the last 5 days (taking sudafed like candy will do that to you). I really hope this weather knocks some of the stuff out of the air. This has been by ar the worst summer for me in a long time.

When I lived in Corvallis for 15 years never once did I have allergies. I loved the sweet smell of grass pollen.

Now that I have moved to Bend, I suffer from allergies. The combonation of pine and bitterbrush pollen gets me. Like others, Zertec and Flonase are the ticket to relieve allergy symptons.

My daughters last few weeks at OSU were miserable for her and expensive for all of us!

She is doing better now that she is back down in God's land but still suffering some. Her mom and little sister are feeling it a bit.

We are thinking due to the wet spring and abundant growth this spring it is worse than normal.

I feel for you all that suffer from it........ guess I'm a "lucky dog!".

Pine pollen is what gets me. The season is almost over, thank god. But Chor-trimetin (sp?) works well for me, and is cheap. My poor wife and daughter, however, have been hurting bad, and are still in search of the perfect anti-histimine.

Years ago I read in the Farmers Almanac that if you add local honey to your diet, you build a natural tollerance to pollen related ailments. (Local Bees make honey with local pollen right?) Ive been putting honey in tea made with the herb "thyme" (fresh) and ginseng root (real wild ginseng shaved with a sharp knife) for many years now, almost every morning. I cant tell you how well the medicinal properties of all three combined work. Im not sure bees use grass or pine pollens but who knows?

Try local honey if you can find some for a few weeks, it really helps.

I have allergies, but no pollen ones, thank God. One look at all that Scotch broom blooming all along the roads and I get the urge to buy stock in Kleenex.

FA - Side effects of allegra?

I use take 2 to 3 times the doseage of OTC stuff everyday. Says to take 1 I'd take 2 or 3! It's almost over. I won't say how much cough syrup I'm drinking just so I can breath.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Around here the state hwy dept likes to plant a type of Scotchbroom called "moonbroom". It looks a lot like regular SB but has pale yellowish-whiteish flowers. When I drive downwind of a patch of that stuff my sinuses plug up immediately & completely.

Currently using a cheap Mexican knockoff called Serralsina which contains 10mg of "Loratadina" . It works fairly well in relieving my symptoms...

Sounds like Flonase is the ticket for most of us. I have been using it in conjunction with Claritid D for the past few years.

Now that Claritin is an OTC drug, it has become very expensive for me. I buy 5 24 hour pills for $9.99 at Rite Aid. My copay used to be $15 for a month supply.

I need to find a new prescription drug for this. I have tried Allegra in the past with no relief.
Perhaps I should join the Zyrtec team.

Any significant side effects? Drowsiness? I am an outside salesrep and drive for most of my day. I cannot afford to not be enthusiastically cheerful and alert.

I'm in the same boat, Tagster. My insurance won't cover OTC, so I had to switch this year.

Zyrtec D is working well for me. The only side effect is "cotton mouth".

I'm in the same boat as most of you with the allergies. They suck! I had my worst attack yesteday (i work as a land surveyor) and was in the middle of a grass field. I don't think all the medication in the world would have helped me yesterday. Alegra and Nasaquart-hq (?sp) nose spray were the ticket last year, but since claritin went otc my insurance won't cover alegra anymore, so i've been takeing the claritin (and it doesn't work as well)
anyway, i can relate to all of the symptoms listed, but i can add one more...my eyes itch like you wouldn't believe, so bad that i have to be very carefull, if i scratch my eyes i end up with blisters on my eyeballs! With out any eye drops i'm in a world of hurt!
If only the world was rid of pollen! jk
