Default Islandbass’s Baby Bass – Crankbait #2 Completed

I finally got around to completing it. This is the same one that caught a largemouth bass while I was field-testing it when it was still unpainted.

Before

This time, I used a super cheap airbrush that I bought a long time ago and forgot about until I did a little spring-cleaning in the garage. The dark green strip was done by dabs with a hand brush.

After

This is what I call Islandbass’s baby bass color scheme.

There is still a lot of improvement in painting, but I think I am getting better with each try.

I can’t wait to try this out.

The eye to it is spot on! I love the color pattern as well; it turned out nicely, this lure should produce some monster fish. ; )

Wow! You've really gotten better at the paint for sure. That's a nice looking bait IB. I still have that topwater if you decide on a topwater project. Just PM me with your address and I'll send it to you. Bill

I like it. I might have to start something like that this winter. Being that i have done many Graphic paint jobs on cars i would maybe pull this off.

Real quick. what did you use for a clear top coat? Did you put down a clear sealer undercoat? I'm not sure what would be appropriat for lures.

Thanks!

As for the top coat, I used Dev Con 2-Ton Epoxy. Many lure makers use it and many also use envirotex. I also know that some of them seal their baits before painting them. However, I didn't learn about that until after I painted and top coated this one.

I have not found a sealer undercoat that I want to try. I am still researching which type would be best or whether I need to seal it at all.

Check out the tackle underground site. This is the place real lure makers share their wealth of knowledge.

Thanks, I will check it out.
Im not sure if a sealer is even needed. Sealers are usually used to help with bleed throughs and adhesion. But i may be overlooking the need for it. so much to learn i guess.

I hear you. The purpose for some lure makers presealing is to prevent water entry into the lure's body if the lure gets damage. I can see their point but for me, I'll keep fishing with it anyway and fix it when I get home.

I know that on a topwater, if it's not sealed the wood will absorb water and it will sink.

ark,

even with the dev con as the top coat, will the water get through it and into the wooden body? I hope not. Let me know.

If the finish starts cracking from time and water (and they will) they will start to absorb water. I used to just put another coat on from time to time.
