Job opps??
Ok, I'm a 15 year old kid heading into the 10th grade and am looking for a job that can suport my fishing expences. Any ideas I have tried several places but everyone says that there not hiring or only 16+. Looking for some where in Salem or Keizer....
Thanks, John

Re: Job opps??
hhhmm, not sure what the neighborhood is like but when I was your age (15 years ago) I'd hop on my bike and ride around to the local farms. Up to 6 miles away and look for people cutting local hay. I'd imagine they're doing that about right now. Just a guess, no one does it where I live now.
Also answered an ad in the paper that a local vetrinarian had placed looking for farm help. He had a small farm the other side of town and needed some fencing done and painting. Won't forget that fencing job either. hottest day in the summer and there's my skinny 125 lb butt out there pulling rotten railroad ties out of the ground and replacing them with good ones.
After I got his farm squared away he put me to work at his office in town painting it.
Once that job was done I was back to putting hay up.
If you know anything about farm animals, people are always looking for someone responsible to feed their critters and watch the place while they go on vacation.

Re: Job opps??
Hay season is in full swing right now. Keep your eyes open, when you see cut grass, or bales in a field, stop and ask if they need help. I have three boys who have several guys that call them this time of year. Be warned, it's hard work, really hard work. Most of the time it's pretty hot too. But on the upside, you get a really good tan, and it's heckofa workout. My boys actually like it. It gets them in shape for football and wrestling.
By the way, there's nothing wrong with being a redneck hick. Better than being a baggy pants skater.

Re: Job opps??
Those light local bales will get you in shape for the 80 pound alfalfa bales and the 125 pound Timothy bales for the farmer down the street.

Re: Job opps??
Walk around the neighborhood and start looking for 40 year old guys mowing lawns on saturday. Most professional landscapers want 40-50 bucks to mow a lawn. Tell them you'll do it, with their mower, for 10 bucks. Odds are good you can mow most yards in half an hour or less. That's 20 bucks an hour. I'd pay any kid with the gumption to ask me 10 bucks for my yard, and it only takes me 15 minutes. But thats why I have an ample waistline.

Re: Job opps??
I used to push my dad's mower around the neighborhood looking for work when I was a kid.
Unfortunately, because of liability issues, it is getting tougher for our young adults to earn a little cash.
It's refreshing to see that some are still interested in doing so, however.

Re: Job opps??
I will ask the Weyerhaeuser mill manager what age they hire for clean up. I suspect 18.
How about grocery stores?

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Wait for the 40 year old guys wife to be home alone, and hit her up for the job.
Heres a pitch: " I cost less than all the beer your husband will drink when he mows it himself."
A pitch to avoid: "can I mow your lawn?" (especially if this is asked prior to the other!)

Re: Job opps??
Check with used car lots.. might be able to wash some cars. Fast food??? there are enough of those in Keizer. North on River Rd and Wheatland Rd there are farms everywhere....Hop farms, hay etc....equipment rental busn.. that equipment needs to be cleaned before it heads out again...
Check with local stables.. you can clean stalls.. they are always looking for someone...
Just some random ideas...

Re: Job opps??
Do you have any private golf clubs around you. I used to caddy at Portland Golf Club in the early 80's. Made great money, 20.00$ for 18 holes or 40.00$ for carrying 2 bags around. This prepped me for carrying elk quarters out of steep coastal canyons.

Re: Job opps??
Check the gas stations. A lot of guys I went to school with in McNary worked at Arco on River Rd. during the summers. I worked there myself for a summer after high school.

I see that you live in Keizer. Have you tried the Vocanoes? Seems like they hire a lot of seasonal help, most of it fairly young like yourself. I

Re: Job opps??
When I was your age, I mowed lawns, refinished cabinets, and tied flies for a local sporting goods store. You have to know your market. Look for lawns that are overgrown. The perfectly manicured lawns aren't going to want your services. The ones that are overgrown obviously need you. Also, try calling up real-estate agents to see if they can hook you up to mow for vacant houses. It makes it easier for them to sell the house if it looks nice.
